JCC Are there actually any *good* holiday/Christmas movies?

For real. I'm dragging myself out of the Halloween movies now into the Christmas ones, and tbh everything is crap. Like besides Harry Potter, what the hell is there? I can't stand any of those Rudolph etc. movies.

Death to anyone who dares to suggest Love Actually.

The film "Joyeux Noel" is based on the unofficial Christmas truce during the first year of WW I. Haven't seen the film yet unfortunately, but the actual historical event reminds me a bit of what Christmas is all about: peace on earth, good will to all.

Really, I thought Christmas was all about badass anti-hero cops shooting things and sadistic ten year olds torturing bumbling criminals.

 

Yah, Bad Santa for sure.

 

Batman Returns.

 

Tangerine is a really great movie that just came out this year. Couple of transsexual hookers blasting through Hollywood on the day before Christmas, out for revenge on a guy who cheated on one of them. Brilliant movie. Funny and surprisingly moving. I think it's going to end up an honorable mention for best film of the year for me. And Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, who plays one of the prostitutes, is definitely going to be in my top ten female performances of the year. But it's a great, great movie. Beautifully, energetically shot; perfectly acted. Sharp, really sharp. In an arthouse circuit crowded with mopey, mumblecore Duplassy movies, Tangerine is a reminder of what indie film really can and should be.

It's a wonderful Life and Love Actually are two I enjoy. Oh, and Bad Santa.

 

If you do watch it, report back. I had a super-positive experience with it, but I don't know anyone else who's seen it, so I'm kind of curious to see how it plays with others. It's got some sentiment, but I think you'll take to its attitude, which is anything but reverent.

 

The Finnish Christmas horror film Rare Exports apparently is okay...

REINDEER GAMES.

 

Yeah, I heard that one was good, if strange. Heard a pretty in-depth review of it on a podcast and I thought it sounded pretty good. Great premise. And then there's that Krampus movie coming out in theaters pretty soon. Time will tell on that one. And I stand by the original Gremlins, if we're talking about Christmas creature movies. I think most people have forgotten just how weird Gremlins really is. That scene of the gremlins taking over the bar . . . I put it up there with anything Fellini ever did for pure surrealism.
