I wonder why most people are right handed? ?[face_plain] What possible scientific reason could there be?

    Does anybody know?

    barnsjedi -

Right or left handedness is controlled by two alleles which act in the Mendelian way.

So Right-handedness is completely dominant over left-handedness.

The ratio should be around 3/4 right to 1/4 left.

    I'm a soccer player, so I'm right footed. :D

I thought the reasoning behind the whole left-right handed split was because back in the days of swords and kings and all that good stuff, warriors who were left-handed were usually killed easier because they held their shield in their right hand, not covering their heart. Therefore, left-handed warriors were weeded out of the gene pool.

I suppose it could be true... I read it somewhere when I was younger.

Really? It's controlled by the genes? So you mean people naturally use one hand instead of the other because they are genetically programmed. Not with me.

You may not believe this, but I can remember the exact moment when I chose to be left handed. It was in my first year of first school, when I was learning to write. The teacher asked me which hand I wrote with, and I didn't know! So I thought for a few minutes and then I just chose my left hand. No particular reason, I just did and I have stuck with it ever since. That is the honest to God truth.

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous

I thought about 10% of the population were LH (which seems to be confirmed by this poll)

Another interesting fact about olden day soliders and stuff. If you go up a spiral staircase, you will be travelling in an anticlockwise direction. This is because nearly all soldiers were right handed, and it's easier for a RH person to defend a staircase is you go down it in a clockwise direction!

Ambidexterous, except for writing. I nearly broke my wrist in a basketball game and it made it too hard to write with my left.

As to why are people left or right, it is partially genetics. But it is controlled by many more factors than that. One has to do with the dominance of the different hemispheres of the brain. Most people are left-dominant, which leads to right-hand dominance, and vice versa for left handed people.
