Be sure not to acknowledge the people you know who come in to buy birth control and a tube or two of the Kentucky Jelly - they don't like that.

So today was my first day of work. Worked from 2 to 8. I got my nametag, locker, and codes and things.

Learned about the price tags stuff, and my schedule today. Then I sat for like four hours learning about what to do in situations of shoplifting, and how to process film, and the processes and protocol for that. (Child porn is to be reported and other explicit sexually material is to be destroyed.)

Will be doing more training tomorrow. From 8 to 2 will I be working.

Did they show you pictures so you know what is and isn't explicit?

So if my sister happens to "lose" a photo she took of one of her children in the bathtub while it's being developed, she'll have you to blame for it, correct?

EDIT -- Or he will avert his eyes and inform her that because he's seen her nude, the only honorable thing to do would be to get married.

Why would people still get explicit photos developed at a drug store? Exhibitionism?

A friend of mine once took a close up picture of one of her friends chest(a guy) and went dropped off the film to get developed. When she got it back she found they had censored the nipples.

Really? So you get a pic of some dudes doing it it gets thrown out and you give them the rest of their pictures? What would you say to the customer in that case? *

What if its nude "photography" or something. You know, artsy? Ask the boss? *

And do you actually see all the pictures? I assume a machine does most of the work. *

And aren't people dropping off SD cards with the possibility of thousands of pictures? But they only want some processed? *

When they get that CD with the proprietary Kodak software on it, do they go to you for tech support? *

    * Actually curious, I have no idea how a mass market photo lab works. I have a printer

1.Yes, hand them a pamphelt and their negatives and explain that we don't print those things.
2.Either way I think we may still destroy them. And if its copyrighted to begin with we can't print. But if its the photographer who took them and stuff I don't know. But why would they come here? I don't think they would.
    3. We have to see the pictures even though the machine does the work, because we have to handle the negatives and put the photos in the envelopes, so we do see them.
    4. They use a Kiosk for that to select the ones they want printed, or go online to do their order.
    5. The CDs are like DVDs. You can play them that way.

Well today was more and more training, with some tomorrow at the computer again. I have learned about the type of film to use, the harassment policies, procedures, in case of robbery annd etc. As far as the training videos go...

Hey Arlon....how many customers do you actually get?

I mean, seeing as how digital cameras have practically cornered the market for photography these days...

People still like to have their pictures, even digital ones, printed and framed around their home or put into albums. It may not be an exclusive market any more, but surely there are still people getting stuff printed.

Yeah, but nowadays you can simply run to Office Depot or Best Buy and buy your own printer and scores of any textured paper you'd like.

One-hour photo labs are on par with the US Postal Service as being two steps away from extinction.

Sure, you can buy one. Doesn't mean people do. I don't know anyone with a photoprinter at home, but all kinds of people that use photolabs still (including clientelle that could probably afford to buy the photolab itself). That's not an accurate cross-section certainly, merely anecdotal, but it does mean that some people out there still use the service. I don't think its nearly as useless as you seem to think it is.
