Gah, I can't believe I forgot it! Added to the list.

I'm sure that they'll be additional Imperial ships to add tomorrow when Inferno Squadron is released.

Thanks guys! I just started reading, but I'll make sure to update the thread once we all finish. I'm not expecting any Rebel ships to be named, but I was fully expecting at least a handful of ISD's to be named.

From Lost Stars. The troopship Watchtower that Thane gets on to take him to Kerev Doi. Not sure if they ever gave a class...so could be a Gozanti, something bigger or just a shuttle.

SD names are easy...'something something something menacing'

 

I'm still waiting for the Kitten Stomper.

 

Question, will we be adding a captured section? As the Rebel Alliance/New Republic Captured the the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer Harbinger, and Interdictor Cruiser Glaciate. And I'm sure there are more to come in further books and comics.

 

We could note that later on for sure. Right now, however, we are going off original allegiance. So the Harbringer and Glaciate are mentioned, just in the Imperial section.

That ties into a question I've had about ISD names since WEG days: with 25,000 ISDs in service, how do they name them all? There are only so many menacing-sounding words in the English language. They're going to have to reuse names many, many times if every ISD has to have a name like Ultimatum or Relentless.

 

Even though we haven't seen many, I assume a significant percentage of ISDs must be named after people or locations.

Think Pride of Tarlandia and such....or named for a battle. You also may have The Tyrant...and then The Tyrant's Fist...and The Tyrant's Vengeance...and The Tyrant's Fury.

 

At the end of the day, Imperial names are supposed to sound imposing or inspire terror. Rebel names, are typically virtues or named to inspire hope/resistance.

The way names are assigned is as inconsistent as we see the modern USN, which regularly sets a naming standard and them deviates from it for various reasons.

Speaking of names, the side story about the Rebel Hammerhead Consonance mentions that the names of the people who died at Scarif have been memorialized. That means there is a distinct possibility that there is an MC80 Raddus or a escort frigate Jyn Erso in the Alliance Navy.

I love this list. Gives me ideas for ship names when playing Star Wars Interregnum. Would it be possible to amend the list with the sources or appearances?

 

I might be end up going back and adding the original appearance/source for each, but not right away. My goal was to compile a list of canon ships as an easy reference. If you're curious about a specific ship, I can probably answer off the top of my head. Otherwise the Wookieepedia is a great place for this as well.

It is surprising to me how comparatively few Rebel ships are named. ISD's have always (even in the old EU) been the most commonly named ships, but I'm hoping these lists balance out a bit.

Was looking at ship names to get inspiration for an upcoming RPG campaign.

We really need a "best bad Star Destroyer names" thread. There's been so many goofy ones over the years.

 

I would name mine "Scrotum". Since random, vaguely unpleasant or uncomfortable sounding words are appropriate for warships.

 

I second this. Just now going through the A's on Wookieepedia got me "Avarice" (you named your starship "Greed"?) and "Assassin" ("Hans, are we the baddies?")

Speaking of over the top evil Star Destroyer names, my favorite is "Persecutor" from Rouge One. Sure names like "Devastator" or "Annihilator" are evil, but in a badass way, and you could frame it in the context of destroying a terrible foe. "Tyrant" "Conqueror" and "Subjugator" are a bit harder to justify, but at least you could frame it in a white man's burden Core Worlder's burden way. Glorious conquest of those barbarians in the Outer Rim, for their own good!


But "Persecutor"? The dictionary definition of persecution is "hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of race or political or religious beliefs". It is by definition unjustified treatment. People might say they "annihilated" the competition or that they "conquered" their fears, but no one ever says "Man my sports team really persecuted yours in yesterday's game!"

 

I just realized I didn't add the Raddus, which was confirmed to be a New Republic warship prior to it's being acquired by the Resistance. I've listed it as a "Raddus-type heavy cruiser" until we get its formal class name. I chose to go with the "-type" to mirror the class nomenclature for other Mon Cala warships.

RE: ISD names, its worth noting that there are literally four named ISD's for every named Mon Cal cruiser. Or, put another way, there is one named ISD for every confirmed canon named Rebel/New Republic warship.
