Very recently, an idea for an Alternate Universe/Alternate History came to me. Glancing through the threads, it does not appear that anyone has tried to run with this idea yet.

The plot comes from one of the missions in TIE Fighter: Collector's Edition CD-ROM version. In one of the later missions, Emperor Palpatine is transferring from Coruscant to the SSD Executor, which is in a different system, via his C-3 Passenger Liner Excalibur. During said mission, forces loyal to treacherous Grand Admiral Zaarin interdict and attack the relatively defenseless Excalibur. In the game, the Excalibur is saved by Grand Admiral Thrawn's fleet and starfighters led by pilot Maarek Stele. Palpatine is eventually transferred to Executor, heads to Endor and the rest as they say is history.

However, what would have happened if Thrawn had not arrived? Perhaps Zaarin had placed another Interdictor Cruiser in Thrawn's fleet's projected path, thus slowing the Chiss Grand Admiral long enough for Excalibur to be destroyed and the Emperor turned into space dust. The scenario would be very open in terms of what would happen next, especially if we assume that Zaarin would at that point probably join the Rebellion.

    1) Who leads the Empire now? Vader is at the Second Death Star now, but would he really be able to lead the Empire? What about the Grand Vizier, what about the other Moffs/Grand Moffs? What about the Grand Admirals? Might Moff Jerjerrod, when he learns that Palpatine is dead, turn the Death Star's superlaser against the Executor, wiping out Vader (this would not be totally unthinkable: remember that although Palpatine was cruel, there was reason to his cruelty, Vader seems more wanton in his actions and it would definitely ease the pressure up on Jerjerrod to kill Vader)? If Vader lives, might Luke be able to turn him back to the Light?

    2) What about the Rebellion? With Zaarin's fleet, they would be more powerful, but still an underdog? Although Palpatine (and many Vader) are dead, the Second Death Star is still around, as well as the mighty Imperial fleets. Of course, Zaarin, having been an R&D man, would definitely know all about the DS2 (in fact, he does, in the canon, plan to give certain information to the Rebel Alliance). Will the Rebel Alliance still carry out its attack on the Second Death Star? If say Thrawn or Jerjerrod were in charge of defending the DS2 without Palpatine's pride getting in the way, might they be able to stop the Rebellion from succeeding or at least minimize losses?

    3) How would Luke respond to learning of Vader's death? Presumably this occurs after his final meeting with Yoda and he knows Leia is his sister? Would he try to restart the Jedi Order earlier since there is no long the overt Sith threat anymore?

These are only a few of the situations that might arise this occurrence. There would be political intrigue, military action, the Force and much more. It would be unique (as best as I can tell, this scenario has not been tried before) and could involve many people. If GMed right, perhaps it might be the long sought-after replacement for IBoP. :)

You would have perhaps an Empire facing the same problems that the Post-ROTJ Empire faced, but with the power and morale (remember, Palpatine was assassinated by a deranged traitor who took advantage of a situation, not systematically outsmarted by the Rebellion and militarily outsmarted) of the Pre-ROTJ Empire and they still have the Second Death Star. Although Palpatine (and possibly Vader) are dead, the Imperial fleet remains strong and Zaarin is no liberator like the Rebellion.

Any comments? Any thoughts? Anyone willing to (help) set this up?

    Thoughts?

The Rebel Fleet, according to sources back in 1983, would only come out if there was a shot at the Emperor, so if Zaarin takes him out first, they likely would not bother to do anything about the second Death Star, and IG-88 would be a very happy bunny indeed, having infiltrated the memory core, and now, once installed, would be the Death Star.

That would be a serious character sheet on anybody's resume: I played the DEATH STAR!

It's actually not a bad thought to have IG-88 become the Death Star -- the DS II was designed to be bigger and more powerful than the first (proving that Freud exists in the GFFA too ;) ) but in this AU you've pretty much got the GFFA equivalent of Unicron running around: a planet-sized menace that destroys everything in its path. And it'll take whole fleets to stop it -- not to mention that with a single mind controlling the entire thing IG-88 can jump via hyperspace if he's ever seriously threatened. It's not a bad idea at all ... though I'd seriously recommend the DS II as an NPC.

As for what the Rebellion would do: they'd have to take a shot at the Death Star somehow. The DS I was the biggest threat to the continuing cohesion of the Alliance, given dozens of systems supporting the Rebellion would likely drop out of the alliance when they're under threat of utter annihilation. "Fear ... will keep the local systems in line. Fear of this battle station." The DS II is just as big a threat as the DS I.

As for the Empire? I take the view it'd hold for a while under Vader's leadership, but if Vader goes or turns back to the Light Side, the Emperor's influence was the main glue holding it together; I think it'd become a bunch of small territories ruled by moffs dependent on the size and resources of their armed forces.

Personally, while the IG-88 idea might be interesting, I think it would detract from the idea I am going for. I'd like to keep it at the idea of Empire vs. Rebel Alliance with some smaller groups involved as well.

Saintheart and Sithy, would either of you be interested in this scenario?

    Several notes:

Firstly, it was not Thrawn's fleet that saved HIM the Emperor. Maarek Stele did so in a lone Missile Boat, and supporting craft did not arrive until after the action was finished.

Secondly, Lord Vader was not at Endor at the time. He was busy dealing with the Rebellion and some of Zaarins forces; witness the subsequent action against Commander Din. He was not aboard Executor, and HIM the Emperor proceeded to Endor without him.

Given Vader's suvival, it is unlikely the Empire would have splintered as it did after Endor. Those who actually ran the Empire--Ars Dangor, Sate Pestage, and the Imperial Ruling Council, would likely have continued to do so with Vader's protection.

Along those same lines, however, Zaarin's cause would also be a tangible threat with significant credibility. I could see him gaining plenty of support as well.

The moffs, however, would not have much of a role. They were minor players in the First Empire, and with the Ruling Council and the Imperial Court continuing to function, the powerbrokers and patronage dealers of the Empire would keep running things.

GAJ, do you think this idea could work and would you have a part in it?

There are two missions in TIE Fighter where Zaarin tries something directly against Palpatine:

    1) The last mission of the normal campaign/game where Zaarin seizes Palpatine and tries to transport him and decoys on three Escort Shuttles.
    2) On of the last missions in the expanded Collector's Edition in which Zaarin sends forces to ambush Palpatine's C-3 Cruise Liner (which is en route to a rendezvous with the 'Executor' which will take Palpy to Endor)

I would love to see someone try to kidnap Palpatine. :p

That's pretty much as possible as someone trying to kidnap Bruce Lee. [face_laugh]

Either way, you end up in a bodybag at the end of the day. [face_mischief]
