    [face_plain] There is no need for such behaviour.

    I'd expect more maturity from the likes of you. [face_plain] [face_plain]

    Australia would not be involved in an ongoing occupation of Iraq but would stay until the country was stabilised

    John Howard to radio 2GB this morning.

    That's an each way bet if ever I heard one. Why doesn't he just say we'll be there until GW says we can go home?

    Australia already withfrew most of our troops there after most hostilities ended. The US asked for more of ours, but Howard said no.

    You were saying?

    Until someone develops a reliable method of propesising future events, no, I don't think he will be able to set a date.

    What I've made plain is you could see a small variation in the existing force through the inclusion of an additional niche capability if I can put it that way, but we do not have a capacity to send large numbers and we don't intend to send large numbers of regular soldiers

    John Howard on radio 2GB, 27th April 2004.

    He is sending more troops.

    Does anyone have any idea about what the ADF is actually doing in Iraq, or are you content to let ignorance mask your decisions? We don't have any frontline counter-insurgent units, we have people involved in reconstruction. Like teaching Iraqis how to operate an airport. Ooooh, look at us, pawns of George W Bush and Satan!!! [face_plain]

    If he's sending more people, chances are they're making a difference, and I'm guessing it'll most likely be to supplement the existing roles as they rotate their deployments. Whilst it probably breaks your little bleeding hearts to hear it, no ADF troops will be shooting Iraqi women and children or flying Old Glory above the nearest mosque.

    Sure, the SAS were there to hand out flowers weren't they? The footage I've seen of Australian troops patrolling in armoured vehicles must be from some other war in some other place that looks just like Iraq.

    That's true that the Regiment (SASR) was used during the war to hit the harder targets deep within Iraqi territory, but that has everything to do with the 22SAS and SASR's complete skill as the premier fighting force in the world. If the SASR is doing anything in Iraq, they're wasted now, and since their CO and several troops were recently interviewed by 60 minutes I'd doubt that you really saw SASR.

    For starters, did they have the standard Australian rifle, the F88 Steyr?

    [image=http://www.defence.gov.au/army/7fdbty/images/equipment/f88.jpg]

    Or the Colt M4 Commando?

    [image=http://people.ucsc.edu/~ryanroth/m4.jpg]

    Whilst it's popular to throw around ideas and even the term "SAS", as PoT did when talking about defence, you have to understand fully what their role is. They're elite soldiers, so using them for basic security in Iraq is ridiculous, and if any of the UK's 22SAS remains, it'll be one Troop (probably Motor) because they have substantially more men at Hereford than our 80 blokes in the Regiment. I don't even know if the US 1SFOD-Delta is in Iraq either, but I'd imagine if any elite force, it'd be them.
