Author for NJO HC #5

I'm going to start a new "who do you want to write the NJO finale" thread, but put some conditions:

1)The author can't have written or currently be slated to write a SW novel.

2)The author has to have written in sci-fi, fantasy or possible horror fields (no Tom Clancy, etc.)

3)The author has to be still living and still writing.

4)Be realistic. What are the chances that Robert Jordan or George R.R. Martin are going to write a SW book. Try to come up with authors you'd like to see do it that might actually do it.

I'll post my pick in a few...

Is Maideline L'Engle still writting?. She always managed to write books that kids, young adults and mature readers could enjoy; with realistic kids and teens playing major roles. Something the NJO could use more of.

I don't think that John Steakley is still writing, but I'm not sure.

I'd like to see it done by Michael Swanwick.

 

Gee, how did I forget the Eddings? Guess I was thinking more SciFi than fantasy, but David Eddings can write very good straight fiction (High Hunt) so he should be able to write within that delicate SciFi/Fantasy balance that is so essential to Star Wars. He (and his wife) do a marvelous job of writing interesting stories that are fit for kids to read (A Wookiee mom note, High Hunt is an R rated book)

Maybe Robert Silverberg, I enjoy his SciFi books even though his fantasies bore me. He, too, should be able to strike that SciFI/Fantasy balance.

How about Andre Norton? She is another writer equally comfortable in both SciFi and Fantasy.

First you ask us who we WANT to write the final one, then tell us it can't be anyone from the backlog of authors or any good authors. So here are some unknowns:

Gavin Browne (believe me, he needs to get this out of his system).
Andrew McKinney (rubbish novelist, but he'll make sure everyone lives and nothing really changes).
Jaime Harrison (this is my personal favourite. Give this guy a SW novel to pen [NOW!!!]).

SW can be any genre. The X-Wing series is a fighter pilot colelction of novels, adapted to Star Wars. Which is why they are so great.

For HC5, the last NJO book, I want a known author myself. Allston (for humour), Crispin (for all-round goodness) or KJA (for writing the most entertaining books around) would be my choices

Don't like Mcafferey, Haven't read Bujold, Pournelle would be good, and I don't think L'engle's writing anymore. Silverburg and Norton would both be fine with me.

Booster, haven't read any of your choices, Moridin, more good choices, MER, I don't think the Reeves-Stevens' would touch SW.

IMHO Odom's not too good, Hamilton would be censored although she is pretty good, and this is a little ambitious for you -- I thought you wanted to write a Tale...

 

What Odom novels have you read? I totally geeked out while reading Threat from the Sea. I wanted to be a pirate. I thought those novels were great, though the end came a little too quick for Iakhovas.

I have to second questioning Lude's choice of Odom. 'By Blood Betrayed' was without a doubt one of the worst books in the BattleTech line. I wouldn't mind seeing a few more BattleTech authors getting a shot at Star Wars (remember, that's where Stackpole got his start). Loren Coleman, Randall Bills and Rob Charette would all do well.

 

In all seriousness, I hope RA Salvatore finish's it off. But he's not eligible by the conditions you've set out.



Of the available authors at Del Ray, I'd vote for Eddings.

Asimov has been dead for 10 years. But I would have liked to see his take on it.

I wouldn't mind seeing David Brin take a crack at it. He's definately got the credentials for it.

Guys, you should really read his books. He is a young Australian writer, and one of his influences is George Lucas. He has written a number of action / adventure type novels, ala a modern Indiana Jones, and he said he will be writing his own space opera soon.

His current released books are:

Matt Reilly would be brilliant. His novels are fast paced, full of intrigue and detail, and he holds nothing sacred. Just look at Contest.

 

Contest, his first book, is probably at the lower end of his work, obvious that it was his first book, however, it was still great!

I absolutely love Temple, and would recommend it to anyone. It goes back and forth between two stories set in two different historical eras. And there are some great twists!

The Shane Schofield duology is also great (Ice Station and Area 7).
