Author Iain Banks has revealed that he has late stage cancer and is unlikely to live for more than a year.
The Scottish writer posted a message on his official website saying his next novel The Quarry, due to be published later this year, would be his last.
The 59-year-old's novels include The Wasp Factory, The Crow Road, Complicity and the Culture series.

A website has been set up for updates and there is a guest book for personal messages.

Oh, wow. I love his Culture series. I was hoping he would write one more, but I guess that sounds kind of selfish. He was a cool dude.

Given the length of time he's been writing, I thought he'd be older.

Must be cancer day. Roger Ebert just announced his cancer has returned.

    :(

I haven't gotten around to reading his Culture books, but I've heard of them and they sound very interesting to me, I will one day.

Damn. Oustanding author. I too selfishly wanted more Culture books. I have not read his non-Cutlure work.

"I've asked my partner Adele if she will do me the honour of becoming my widow."

That line deserves some kind of literary award.

I'm probably going to hell for laughing at that.

Very sad to hear this. My agnostic version of prayers go out to him and his family.

This is so unfortunate. I got back into fiction reading, after a many-year drought, with his Surface Detail. I quickly became a big fan. His ideas and his style are just excellent. And he seems like a cool guy. Just sad.

It sounds pretty morbid and pessimistic at first, but then I realize that he's just being realistic with himself and more or less, making the best out of it with that clever line.

This really really sucks. A true genius and he will be missed. When I saw his announcement of terminal cancer a few weeks back I didn't think he'd go that quick.

    R.I.P.

IMHO at least one ship, if not several, appearing in Rebels or in Ep.VII should be given really Culture-esque names in honor of him.

From what I heard he had been to the doctor's recently and was told that he could be around longer than expected. He then took a bad turn a day or two later and passed away.

I'm sure your local bookstore/library/Amazon outlet will have some if you want to give him a try. And he does have his last book coming out later this month.

I've only read one of Banks' books -- The Player of Games, mainly because I can't find the others in secondhand stores. That in itself is probably a testament to the guy's skill: by and large, you find the bad authors in secondhand bookstores. Good authors are held onto. I'll be looking for others over the years. He was a great author.
