Do ships have an auto-pilot feature in the SW Universe?

    Just wondering

    Thanks in advance

Yes. As an example, while the Falcon was in Hyperspace they were all in the back... or how Luke tells R2 he wants to put in manual control, which implies that normally R2 would be flying it in that situation.

Wrong ousley, we wouldn't be on Dagobah, we'd be... oh, right where we're sitting anyways. Although the boards would be missing out...

Anyways, to answer the question, as ousley said, yes, ships have autopilot, which are fairly capable but not usually as reliable as a living being at the controls in takeoff/landing situations, or combat (I think the latter part there is fairly obvious :p).

When Han and Chewie are doing repairs on the Falcon's hyper-drive in 'Empire' (right before they hit the asteroid field) is the Falcon on auto-pilot or is Leia flying??

    Surely girls can't fly starships!!

Er.. there have been female rebel pilots, and Leia was probably trained, aside from a blaster, in many other skills. Probably including flying.

Granted its EU, and they're not Alliance pilots, but there are a number of female pilots in the Han Solo Trilogy. Whats to say there weren't any in the rebellion?

To say females can't fly starships simply because they are women would be nothing less than bigotry.

I always assumed leia was flying it, I mean it would be kind of silly to program the autopilot to fly into an asteroid feild[face_laugh]

Padme flies a starfighter at the beginning of AOTC, and then her personal craft later in that same movie. Naboo's Bravo squadron had a female pilot. Reportedly, several scenes with female rebel pilots were cut from ROTJ.

It's a matter of debate on these boards if (Not looking at any EU materials) Leia could pilot a starship or not. The key scene people look at is that ESB sequence where Leia is sitting in the co-pilot's chair while Han and Chewie are in the back fixing the ship. Some say Leia is flying the ship, others say the ship is on auto-pilot. I'm not certain, but it's telling that Leia doesn't take evasive action herself, but instead calls back to Han to take the controls.

Two other examples of auto-pilot can be found in ANH. The first is when the Falcon escapes Tattooine, and Han, Luke, Ben, Chewie, and the droids are all lounging in the back of the ship. In addition, after the escape from the Death Star, Leia and Han are sitting in the cockpit chatting away, and Han doesn't seem to be manipulating any controls as he jibber-jabbers with the Princess.

I think both instances are supposed to be in Hyperspace (despite the lack of hyperspace effects behind the Han/Leia conversation)
you don't need to do any piloting in hyperspace
    do you?

I've always thought Leia was flying the Falcon at that moment, because their were still dodgeting the imperial tie fighters, they couldn't relay on th auto-pilot (But that means that Leia got them into the asteroid field) Besides, she has Anakin's genes, and the Force, she surely can fly.

No, at that time Chewbacca was still flying. When he went to fix the Hyperdrive, Lando took over.
