I looked back several pages and couldn't find a thread like this, so I'm starting one. "Awards Season" is, indeed, just around the corner; In about 6 weeks or so the Golden Globe nominees will be announced. So place your predictions for nominations based on films you've seen, reviews you've read, or buzz you've heard. Golden Globes, SAGs, Oscars...any and all award predictions are welcome. Also, feel free to discuss your favorites, but please don't flame anyone for theirs. Enjoy!

I just want to see if Nemo gets a best picture nod at the Oscars. That would be cool. Only the second animated movie to be considered for the award and the first computer animated one. Disney is pushing for it but we shall see.

BTW Revolutions is a lock for best effects.

LOTR will win Best Picture, Director and Visual Effects, robbing such worthy candidates as TM:Reloaded and Revolutions. Viggo will get nominated for Actor or Supporting Actor. The Tech boys will get a special achievement in Visual Effects award

Mystic River will win Actor, Adapted Screenplay, and Supporting actor and will be nominated for Best Picture and Director.

Big Fish will be nominated in many categories but will get swept.

Cate Blanchett will be nominated for at least one of her movies.

Cold Mountain, and The Return of the King are sure to be nominated. I'm pretty sure Lost In Translation and Mystic River will get a few as well, along with The Last Samurai and Master and Commander, which are so obviously films that cater to Oscar voters. I hope Shattered Glass and Big Fish get the nods in some areas (particularly for Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen....how cool would it be for them to go up against one another for Best Actor?) but who knows if that will happen. I'm sure Nicole Kidman and Renée Zelleweger will get noms for CM, as will Jude Law. I'd like to see Finding Nemo nominated, and I'm sure it will win Best Animated Film. LotR will win for visual effects, of course (even though in my opinion they robbed AotC last year just because LotR got a better critical response as an overall film). I hope PotC gets nominated for visual effects, but who knows if it will? There were so many effects movies this year, but PotC was one of the more successful, and it seems that's how they determined the nominees last year--otherwise, how the hell else would Spiderman have gotten nominated?)

It's too early: the major contenders usually open in the last one to two months of the year.

Lots of movies---The Human Stain" comes to mind here---are made strictly for Oscar, because they are certainly not box office material. These movies all come out late in the year to improve their chances. Sometimes they have one showing on December 31st, 2003, so that they're eligible.

robbing such worthy candidates as TM:Reloaded and Revolutions.

Matrix films are style over substance. They are worthy candidates for SFX awards, but nothing else.

Best Picture Oscar: Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Best Animated Picture Oscar: Finding Nemo

Best Picture Drama Golden Globes: Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Best Picture Musical or Comedy Golden Globes: Finding Nemo

Best Actor Musical or Comedy Golden Globes: Johnny Depp for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Best Visual Effects Oscar Nominations: Return of the King, Pirates of the Carribran and Terminator 3.

Movies that shouldn't get nominated simply because they made the films to get award nominations.

    Cold Mountain
    The Human Stain
    The Last Samurai

    I'll post more later.

Hate to say it folks (okay, I don't), but Lord of the Rings and Matrix Revolutions aren't Oscar material, unless you're going for effects. RotK may get a nomination for Best Picture or Director if its lucky, but it won't win. I'll say its a shoe-in for Best Cinamatography though. Matrix will probably win effects.

    Best Picture contenders:
    Seabiscuit
    The Human Stain
    Cold Mountain
    Master and Commander (possibily)
    Lost in Translation
    Mystic River
    Finding Nemo, perhaps.
    Big Fish (but not likely)

    Best Actor
    I'm sorry. Johnny Depp won't and shouldn't win. :p
Russell Crowe might get another nomination.
Anthony Hopkins is usually an Oscar favorite
Sean Penn or Tim Robbins for Mystic River--one will most likely get a nod.
I want for Ewan McGregor to get one, but that remains to be seen.
Tom Cruise for Last Samurai also sounds like a good bet.
    Jude Law for Cold Mountain.

    Best Actress
Nicole Kidman is a necessary Oscar fixture.
    Scarlett Johannesson maybe?
Diane Lane may get one for Under the Tuscan Sun, due to a mainly weak pool for the year.
I can't really think of anything.

    Supporting Actor
Chris Cooper and Jeff Bridges for Seabiscuit. One will be nominated for sure.
    Ed Harris for Radio.
Can't think of anything else right now...

    Supporting Actresses
Don't pay attention to that much.

    Animation
In the bag for Finding Nemo.

LOTR is not winning Best Director or Best Picture. No matter HOW good it is, I don't think the Academy wants to throw it a bone.

My money's on Lost in Translation.

I don't know if it's just me, or has anyone else been dissapointed with the way the Golden Globes or the Oscars vote.
I mean I have been disappointed like 3 or 4 times in a row. If that number gets to 5, I won't be happy.

I will be very interested to see the nominations this year, because there are so many really good films to be in the running for best picture.

If ROTK is nearly as good as its supposed to be then i think its pretty much guaranteed that it will win best picture.

I just want to see if Nemo gets a best picture nod at the Oscars.

    Yeah thatd be nice.

Runaway Jury will probably be nominated.

    Haha no chance

Hate to say it folks (okay, I don't), but Lord of the Rings and Matrix Revolutions aren't Oscar material, unless you're going for effects.

Oh so you've seen them right? Cause i mean how else could you know if they were oscar material.

I'm hoping Kill Bill will get a cinematography nod

I bet lost in translation will get a director and actor nod but probably no best picture nod

No, LOTR should win everything but won't because the Academy is too sophisticated to recognise it.

I pretty much agree with Gobi-1's choices.

It's true that there are a lot of contenders that haven't come out yet.... November and December are full of them.

I do think ROTK should and will win a lot of awards. Who says the Academy doesn't vote on movies like that... Titanic and Gladiator come to mind. I love both of those but LOTR far surpasses them.

    I predict Oscar noms for:
    - director
    - film
    - actor? (viggo or elijah)
    - visual effects (they far surpass those of the Matrix IMO)
    - sound
    - editing
    - soundtrack
    - adapted screenplay
    - costumes
    - cinematography

    And there are more.

I would love it if Johnny Depp won best actor in a comedy at the Golden Globes.

I haven't seen Shattered Glass or Big Fish yet... but my heart hopes they'll be nominated for something. Ewan is always fantastic, as is Tim Burton. Hayden Christensen has been getting truly amazing reviews for SG... so a tiny part of me is hoping...

At Rotten Tomatoes you can see that so far, Shattered Glass is ranked about the 7th "best" movie all year- with a 97% Fresh rate. Check it out here.

    This is a great thread!

However, most of the Oscar/Golden Globe films are released November and December so hard to say. Here are some front runners I see, some based on movies I've seen and some based on what I predict:

    Best picture
    -Mystic River
    - Lost in Translation
    - Cold Mountain
    - Whale Rider (unlikely)
    - Shattered Glass, (come on Lion's Gate!)
    - LOTR

    Best Actor
    - Sean Penn, Mystic River
    - Tim Robbins, Mystic River
    - Jude Law, Cold Mountain
    - Anthony Hopkins, The Human Stain
    - Bill Murray, Lost in Translation
    - Hayden Christensen, Shattered Glass (I just know the Oscars won't grant him a nomination but I can see Golden Globe)

    Best actress -
    Naomi Watts - 21 Grams
    Nicole Kidman - Cold Mountain
    Cate Blanchette - Veronic Guerlan
    Gwyneth Paltrow - Slyvia
Meg Ryan - In the Cut (longer shot)

    Best supporting actress -
    Rene Zellweger - Cold Mountain
    Laura Linney - Mystic River

    Best supporting actor -
    Kevin Bacon - Mystic River
Benico Del Torro - 21 Grams
    Alec Baldwin - The Cooler
    Peter Saarsgard - Shattered Glass

    Director -
    Clint Eastwood - Mystic River
    Peter Jackson - LOTR
Sophia Coppola - Lost in Translation (wouldn't that be something?)
    Anthony P...? - Cold Mountain

    Other randoms items -
Original screenplay - Sophia Coppola, Lost in Transalation
    Costumes - Down with Love
    Adapted screenplay - Shattered Glass
    Special effects - Matrix Revolutions
    Animation - Finding Nemo

I'll re- address this topic at the end of December!

Hey, I never said RotK or MR were going to suck. I just said they're not Oscar material.

RotK may get a nod, but not a win. I'm being realistic--normally fantasy/sci-fi films never win (same goes for sequels/continuations, Godfather II being the exception to the rule), and it's usually some heart-gripping drama. Besides, there are a lot of great films out there that don't get the mass acceptance that deserve it. Sure, critics are wrong a lot, but that doesn't mean the popular movies are always the best movies. The Academy Awards tend to favor "art films" that are still films. Lord of the Rings are movies. There are a lot of effects, and although we're progressing into the more digital age, stuff like A Beautiful Mind that's almost pure cinema is what wins them over.

And don't even try and say that Matrix Revolutions has a chance at a Best Picture nomination. :p It's all flashy effects, plus, they sold out. Big franchise movies get the dough, the lesser movies get the awards. Of course, Chicago, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, Titanic, etc etc all have done well at the awards, but they're still made as epic films, not just popular movies. RotK has the epic going for it, but it's fantasy and the final in a trilogy. Plus, there are a lot of other strong candidates coming out too.

Say what you wish, but RotK is not a forerunner. I don't need to see the movie to say this ( :p ); it's called precedent.
