JCC Baby It's Cold Outside: Things to do when its brutally cold...

So we're currently under-going the coldest spell of weather for years in the UK.

Temperatures haven't risen above -4C all day here, there's a howling east wind from the Urals (making it feel like it's -14C) and much of the country is being swept by blizzards and huge snow drifts.

People in the U.S.A tend to be used to these kind of extreme cold and blizzard-like conditions so what are your top tips to occupy your time when it's too cold to venture out and your stuck in doors during a blizzard?

(Keep it clean.. Or not. It's up to you. )

That, reading, and TV works for me. I've been out once today - to fill bird feeders. The robin, blue tits and sparrows are happy. Not a lot of snowfall in my area today (out near Heathrow). It's been mostly light so far.

 

Like you go outside when you even have the chance, nerd.

 

Wait, I'm confused. You say it's brutally cold, but the temperature is -4C with wind chill at -14C? I bet it doesn't even hurt to breathe. Brutal cold doesn't start until about -30.

 

I wake up, because blizzards here in L.A. only happen in dreams.

 

My place is chilly as well. I've pulled all the curtains early to cut down on the chill from the windows.

I'd like to tell you what we do in the U.S., but you need to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit first.

-4 C is a perfectly nice temperature. Wear a coat. Wear gloves and a hat if you plan on being out for a while. Frolic in the fresh winter air. FROLIC I SAY

-14 C is unpleasant. Continue all your normal daily activities, wear a coat, a hat, and gloves if you go outside, and swear a lot.

Call me again when it is at least -25 C. That is the time to stay inside and drink heavily.

 

G, I advise you to avoid getting cabin fever, or it will end up in a **** show. See above.

 

Being a weather geek, owning a weather website and doing daily weather videos on YouTube I'm actually one of the few people left in the UK that can do Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion (-4c = 24f for example) but I thought if @Ender Sai saw I was pandering to Yankies by posting Fahrenheit when literally the entire rest of the world posts in Celsius he'd have a blue fit!

It was only -10 C here today, but the wind made it feel like hell. I pack myself in well, but there's not much you can do with the face without looking like you're going on an arctic expedition (i.e. overdoing it) so every time I got a headwind, it felt like my face was melting.

 

MAN IT'S COLD

 

Ah the classic "It's pretty cold in this region where it normally doesn't get this cold" followed by "OH YEAH?! WELL WHERE ARE I AM IT'S NEGATIVE INFINITY!"

 

a good thing to do when it's cold is to fix your boiler by thawing your external condensate pipe.
