Background zoom effect... or something...

I can't really describe the effect I'm trying to talk about, but it's where the background zooms in or out while the character stays the same, or something like this. I can't think of an example right now, but it's almost like it was a bluescreen trick, but I don't think that's it. Is there some other way to achieve this effect?

It's called the vertigo effect. Edit: You zoom while tracking backwards in a reciprocal amount.

 

You'd probably find more info via google using the Hitchcock Zoom.

Its called so many things nowadays I cant keep up with it. A basic description is you zoom foward at the same speed you walk backwards and vise-versa for the other way.
