Yeah it gets a bit confusing. Whats the difference between a company, a platoon, a brigade, a unit, and a regiment??

I get all that stuff, I just don't see where the show is ging??? I admit, I only gave it an hour to win me over, but I thought in that time I would begin to understand something of the point of the whole thing. I didn't expect something neatly packaged like SPR, but I did excpect something

beside the whole "war is bad, m'kay" thing

In a nutshell, it's the company history of Easy Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division "The Screaming Eagles".

Last week saw the progression from basic training up the eve of the drop on Normandy, and then D-Day itself. Last night covered Easy's first operation as a near full strength company and an overview of their 26 days on the line after D-Day. Next week shows a chunk of Operation Market Garden, the biggest failed airborne operation except the defence of Dien Bien Phu. Future episodes will cover the siege of Bastogne, in which the 101st are surrounded by 6 or 7 German divisions, and later, the capture of Hitler's Eagle Nest.

For those not in the know, a unit is any group of soldiers with a commander. The tabel of organisation for the 101st Airborne goes from largest to smallest - Division, Regiment/Brigade, Battalion, Company, Platoon, section then squad. Eight to twelve men made up a section, 3-4 sections made a platoon, 3 platoons made a company, 3 companies make a battalion, 3 battalions make a regiment, and at least two regiments make a division. Multiple divisions will make a Corps. A brigade is a regimental sized formation, though, IIRC, it is the equivalent term for armoured and cavalry formations.

In a sense, BoB combines the best aspects of both SPR and The Thin Red Line. TTRL suffered from too much personal reflection and introspection, and SPR didn't have enough. BoB shows that the soldiers get scared, can be brave beyond anything they thought themselves capable of, it shows the comradeship the troops had to build. You see them making the most of bad situations. To me, that is the point of the series.

    war is pointless.

    war is also necessary.

if only women ran the world - then countries simply wouldn't talk to each other, unless they were stuck in line at the inadequate UN toilet facilities.

EDIT: and all wars would be over within 1 month :p

I once heard that if only poiticians were drafted, or the age of conscription was jacked up to 65, war would quickly become extinct. Maybe we should do it that way.

Thank you General Cargin Sir! That was highly informative for the interested yet knowledge-poor. You obviously know lots about this kind of stuff. Which is good.

However, please no more spoilers! i don't want to know how it turns out before I watch it. Thanks.

In the case of BoB, yes. Unlike the movie version of Titanic, where there is a fictional story set against a real backdrop, BoB is real from go to whoa. That is what makes the journey so interesting.
