you can model with just about any platform in the medium-high end range... MAX would fall into the medium end and yes it can model...

there are thousands of modeling tutorials for MAX across the web... go to Renderosity or CGNetwork or 3D Cafe and look at their tutorials... there's an abundance of it...

You can model in almost every animation package period. With very few exceptions (say the old form Z - Electic Image combo) you have modeling capabilities. Even in low end apps like Bryce, Hash, Carrara and truespace have all modeling capabilities to a greater or lesser extent.

    Read the FAQ or something.

If he can't figure if he can model in Max (how can you animate and not say, visit Discreet's site to figure that out) the FAQ might be getting ourselves to far ahead.

    what programs do i need

What are you doing, in what, for what? Your request is way too vague. If you already have an animation package (you imply that by saying you know how to animate), use the modeling capabilities of your program. There are some specialized modeling apps which might make thngs easier and then you export towards your animation app. In this category you have Wings, Silo, Rhino3D, Modo and ZBrush.

Here's a thought. If he claims to have Max 7 and doesn't even know if you can model with it or not, do you really think he bought it? Just a thought.

if that's the case, then you're in luck... with every installation of MAX since about MAX 4, Discreet includes over a 100 megs of tutorials... you can view them either from inside the program, or just got to the HELP directory from the 3DSMAX root directory and double click on a file that looks like this:

    3dsmax_t(compiled HTML file)

it has everything from basic principles to advanced techniques...
    ;)
