    TITLE: Mortal Coil Prologue/?

    AUTHOR: Juliet3:16 or Juliet

EMAIL: PG - 13 for now

SPOILERS: Kind of tricky, but let's just say after Stephanie dies, but before anybody knew Jason was alive. For story purposes Dick was never in the mob for an extended period of time and did not quit the Bludhaven P.D. at the beginning of this story.

SUMMARY: The Bat - clan has to deal with an enemy that did not strike from outside, but within one's own body...

DISCLAIMER: I won nothing. DC does.

DISTRIBUTION: WWOMB. Anybody else, please ask.

    Mortal Coil

Richard Grayson walked into his Bludhaven apartment wanting nothing more to collapse and just sleep for a month. He had just spent three days undercover in one of Bludhaven's Mafias. Nothing unusual about that. Except that this time it was for his day job as one of Bludhaven's finest and not for his duties as the vigilante, Nightwing. Fortunately, for Dick, the assignment went off without a hitch, and now only was a mob crew dismantled, but a few more of Bludhaven's notorious dirty cops were off the street as well.

Dick looked toward the couch to find Roy Harper asleep on it. Whenever Dick knew that Nightwing would have to disappear for a few days, he could always count on his friend's alter - ego, Arsenal to watch over the city in his absence. Dick trusted few others.

Deciding to let Roy continue sleeping on the couch, Dick headed into his bedroom, fully intent on a shower in the adjacent bathroom before trying to get a few hours of sleep himself. Several minutes later as he was stepping out of the shower, he noticed the light on his answering machine was flashing. Putting a towel around his waist, he walked over to it.

"27" he muttered, "I didn't even get that many messages when I was living in Wayne Manor,"

Dick was a little worried. He knew Roy rarely checked Dick's messages when Arsenal was watching over Bludhaven, partly because Roy did not think it was his place to and partly because the last time he checked them, Roy got an earful of a rather intimate message to Dick from Barbara Gordon on it. Roy could not look Barbara in the eye the next time he saw her.

On the other hand, perhaps because of the length of his absence Roy did check them this time and he did not hear anything too pressing to try and find Dick before Dick had completed his assignment. Shaking off his trepidation, Dick hit the play button...

...And felt his blood run cold as he listened to a terrified Barbara's words:

"Dick, where are you? Bruce collapsed and was taken to the hospital! The doctors don't know what's wrong with him or if he's even going to make it!

*leaves everybody hanging on that cliffhanger and points objects thrown to recyclables*
