These puffins sound weird but interesting. That's all I can say for now until we get more concrete info or at least some concept to get a better idea of how they look.

So basically an island of these guys:

 

The BattlePuffins feel like they'll be following in the SW tradition of primitive peoples, who have a deep connection to nature ( the Living Force ), following in the footsteps of Ewoks and Wookies.

As Ahch-To might be inspired by the myhological Otherworld, and as one of their number seems to regard himself as guardian of Ahch-To, the BattlePuffins might represent such elemental beings as the gnomes, sylphs, or undines, depending upon whether they are most closely associated with the land, air, or sea.

Definitely feeling like it's going to be a mythical elemental creature. Like a tiny griffin. Maybe something like this:

The irony is that you don't need to give puffins razor sharp teeth to make them potentially dangerous. You never forget a bite from a puffin as those beaks are like secaturs!

I do sometimes forget that the interwebz is global. 'Twas but a play on the horrid and thankfully pretty much now defunct British term 'puff' (or 'poof' if you're from down south) for 'an homosexual'.
