Speaking as someone who knows exactly who A-Rod is, I think Beckham is off to enjoy his retirement. I'd be surprised if he played in every game, and expect he'll retire within a couple of years.

Then he'll go into movies. :p

Don't worry, baseball players will be making that much pretty soon too.

His annual salary must be more than twice that of the Red Bulls' entire team.

And I don't care how popular he is around the world: this will be a huge mistake for the LA Galaxy and the MLS.

This is a ridiculous amount of money to be paying to anyone.

While he would be an absolute fool to turn it down LA Galaxies are absolute fools for offering him this much money in the first place.

This guarantees at least one sellout for Toronto FC. Hell, Becks should buy the tickets for us. Lord knows he can afford it.

Not sure if that will be a mistake or not, but Beckham got a name and luck... ;)

Isn't that a little much to be paying a Soccer player? I mean it's just I don't know, he's good and all but I've never really been won over by Beckham to feel he deserves that kind of cash.

That's one of the potential problems to this deal, as while he is a name, he cannot make many Americans forget that they're still watching soccer (and an especially inferior one at that).

And I'd like to see more details of that contract, as there must be marketing deals and deferred payments in there.

He'll be making roughly 4 times what top players in Europe get.

Yep, that would be interesting for sure.

There are more people in the world who could need a bit of that money. I wouldn't even know what I should do with $250 million... do you?

It's all relative. You become accustomed to the standard of living your income can give you.

And... we shouldn't forget that the sportmen just have a short time to earn money. After their sport career they don't know what will happen (if they get another job, more jobs in TV, commercials etc). That's why they have to earn more, so they can afford a life after their career.

But... if it has to be that much? I don't know.

Can't Beckham buy the entire league for $250 million? If not that, than he can at least buy over half the clubs.

Will I watch his team play if their on tv? Yeah, I really do love Soccer. In fact it's been the highlight of my day for months now that Fox Midwest shows soccer games around 1 everyday here. And mostly it's the European soccer games, which is fine by me. Their so violent sometimes. Its great.

I'm so thankfully the bf got me to stop and watch the World Cup game or I would not have thid darling new obsession of soccer.

But for Beckham, I don't see how he can win over the American public and getting them to watch Soccer. But maybe he can do it. We'll see.

I think his popularity in the States will soar. But I'm not sure the MLS's will*.

    *i.e. it won't.

seriously, what is MLS? Is this a new league? I wont pay a dollar to watch soccer and they are paying that guy 250 million. HAHAHAH wow they are dumb. Hockey, Football, and baseball are the only sports I'd pay to see... with hockey and football being number 1A and 1B and baseball a distant 2

Just to clarify something, the majority of that 250 million, is from endorsements that were already in place before Beck's move to the Galaxy. He is not getting paid 50 million annually, by the team. So, this is not as obnoxiously over the top as A-Fraud's contract.
