I'm new to the boards and I was curious about this topic so here it goes:

How do you become a MOD? Is that your dayjob? Are you paid by this website to be a moderator?

    or...

Are you just picked out of the pool of frequent users who can be trusted? Which brings me to ask who decides who can be a MOD and what kind of reputation they'd have to have to acheive that status???

Welcome to the boards. Actually, it's kinda obvious what kind of reputation they need. To sum it up, regular posting (don't spam), have logged a lot of hours being on the JC, have intelligent and contributing posts, get known around the JC. Chances are you won't become a MOD on a forum this big (135,000 users!!!), so I wouldn't get your mind set on it, especially since this is your first post.

    Bribes work also....

    ...at least on Bertocci. 8-}

    HERE

Be sure to visit the Welcome board, also.

That'd be the answer. As for how to be a moderator, over the past two weeks I've been told:

    1) You need to be a Dark Lord to be a moderator in Community.
    2) You need to be female to be a moderator in Fan Fiction.
    3) You need to be male to be a moderator in Literature.
    4) You need to be wearing pants to be a moderator in 3SA, unless you're already a moderator in 3SA.

Maybe someone with the time can write a Comms. FAQ that answers commonly asked questions such as this.

Mods are picked out of necessity. If a forum needs a mod (if one steps down, the amount of traffic increases, or some other reason) then they pick a regular member out of that forum that knows the ins and outs of the forum. They generally have been around for a while (at least a year), follow the Terms of Service and often assist the current moderators.

The current Administration (or Mod Squad, as they are commonly known as) takes a group of the most qualified members and picks the one with the most upside to be the moderator.

    Hope that helps.

And oh yeah. Everything Raven said is completely true.

Actually, the second half of Raven's post is theory.

    And fof, you're joking, right?

Anybody: I was under the impression it doesn't matter which forum they're familiar with. A couple mods said they were chosen for forums they'd never been to in my thread.

That's an urban legend. You never have to wear pants in 3SA, regardless of who you are.

Someone should pin a topic that answers all these questions for newbies, so we dont get the same threads coming up again... and again...

that would help, but its not just here that this thread always ends up appearing, the YJCC is another place as well that this rule should be pinned up in

isn't there already a bunch of these basic question threads around here somewhere? someone should relaly up on of those. or include them in the sticky thread. that would actually be useful information to have in the sticky thread.

    What are pants?
Short, shallow breaths. Usually associated with passion and/or being a quadriped.
You need to be a Dark Lord to be a moderator in Community.
And the film forums, too. Don't forget that. :D

You COULD be a dedicated poster, posting helpful links, directing people on where to go, informing people of the rules when needed, and avoid getting banned.

Or you could do what I did, the quick and easy path, if you know what I mean

(which I hope you do, because you're on a Star Wars message board ;))

Not trying to sound terse, but by the time you (or I) got enough posts & karma to become a mod, the movies would be finished... so, what's the point? Post & enjoy 'till the boards close.

The boards predate the prequels, so odds are they'll outlast them as well.

They'll only close if PhilWise manages to run everyone off.
