You know, this story is amazing to me. At the very beginning, every agreed that he was wrongly targeted and should not have been cuffed by the police. Then, he started getting support from politicians, industry leaders, and scientists, and a lot of free stuff from companies. And that's when jealous internet contrarians decided to parse his words "he said the word 'invent' when he didn't invent anything" even though he's an ESL speaker. The facts didn't matter to them, even though they were the ones who claim that they represent facts. And then people like Richard Dawkins, afraid of a brown muslim encroaching his white atheist STEMlord safe space, started tweeting against him, and it galvanized all the /r/atheist-style morons and conservative morons to rally against him en masse.

"How dare he sue. He's literally stealing from the taxpayers."]

"His father is an Islamist attention-seeker. Please ignore how he runs as a liberal anti-Islamist for Sudanese President"

"He wanted to get arrested because he knew sjws would send him free stuff."

"He's moving to Qatar where he's getting a scholarship, why won't he stay here where we hate him?"

The internet hate train is in full force against this kid.

To be fair, I'd wager that the majority of people don't understand the US legal system which essentially dictates two things for civil cases:

    1) You have to sue, even when there isn't a wronged-party (so when there is it's pretty easy), to recoup anything without an unsolicited settlement, and
    2) Dollar values are relatively meaningless, but asking for too little is a bad plan.

I'm all for him suing, since I'd wager they tried to force a settlement where no wrong-doing was admitted -- and this will eventually be won or settled for like 1 - 10% of the amount and an admission of wrong-doing, or some other procedural change.

One misunderstood aspect of civil litigation is that there are different types of damages (actual, special, punitive etc etc) to be claimed and so a plaintiff will just sue for the maximum amount that is permitted in that particular jurisdiction. So if the jurisdictional limit for a particular court is $1million then you will sue for $1million and you will particularise your claim accordingly. The press just pick up on the "$1million" dollar thing and assume that is whatc is actually being claimed when often it is not.

Well duh. Because he can't possibly. That $15 million is just to fund a terrorist organization. His love of science and NASA is obviously just a cover for his innate terrorist tendencies.

Or, in the case of Rush Limbaugh and others, they know better, and fear the public might care if they knew, so its better to phrase things in a way that is sure to stoke racism.

The Statue of Liberty Was Originally a Muslim Woman

The United States has debated immigration since the country's founding, and the Statue of Liberty—a potent symbol for immigrants—is often invoked as an argument for why we should usher in those who seek safety and opportunity with open arms. A little-known fact about Lady Liberty adds an intriguing twist to today's debate about refugees from the Muslim world. The statue itself was originally intended to represent a female Egyptian peasant as a Colossus of Rhodes for the Industrial Age.

America has long been a refuge for those fleeing persecution and dire straits. They come to build a better life or at least have the opportunity to try. That's why they come. We can't become too insular or we will fade fast as a country.

That shooter has more in common with ISIS than the guy he was trying to kill.

Wouldn't vote for him, but I concur with him. My 2008-2009 student body president at Texas Wesleyan was and is a Muslim, and she's a wonderful lady. What happened in California was done by two people who are an exception to the rule, as many of us know. I'm sick and tired of this hate against American Muslims and Muslims in general. Ever since 2003, this religion has been the one with whom I agree the least theologically, but I was appalled from the beginning by the deaths of Iraqi civilians. I believe in human rights, and I know the vast majority of American Muslims do, as well. I'm tired of Trump and others for their lies about them.

This is more a religious bigotry, but I'm going to put it here because...it's probably about brown people

    https://today.yougov.com/news/2015/12/09/most-americans-dislike-islam/

YouGov/HuffPost's latest research shows that most Americans have an unfavorable opinion of Islam. 58% of Americans have an unfavorable opinion of Islam, and just over a third (35%) say that they have a 'very unfavorable' opinion of the religion. Only 17% of Americans view it positively. Democrats (27%) are the most likely to have a favorable opinion of Islam, but even they tend to say that they view Islam negatively. Among independents (58%) and Republicans (75%) most people have a negative view of Islam.

Well, when you have politicians and talk radio hosts who propagate the negative view of Islam (or "Commies, Socialists, liberals, feminists," and so forth), it really is no surprise their supporters agree. If all you hear is how Muslims are trying to impose Sharia law on Americans, or kill innocent men, women and children, or make it illegal to worship the Christian god - and any story that can be spun that way even if its an aberration - well, you created and maintain that monster.

Fearful folks will latch on those who promise hope and salvation - solutions not even required.

Sadly, fear and hatred unite a large number of unsavory, ignorant people.

I've had the pleasure to meet many Muslims, mostly of Lebanese and Palestinian descent, who have been very polite to me in various settings. I like to return the courtesy, since they're people just like anyone else. It's disgusting how some Americans feel about them.

Tell us more about Mrs Doubtfire and the folks at Texas Upper Rhine/Westphalia University!

So America. You guys have like... six Muslims. Seriously, I would wager you could go weeks without seeing someone in traditional Muslim garb. Months. So why are you such dicks about it?

Shows how little you know - here in my Seattle suburb I see many (presumably) Muslim women - on the streets (who exchange polite hellos and all with me), clerks in stores, a neighbor a few blocks away...

Yeah I'm sorry but you have a tinnnnnny number of Muslims which makes the disproportionate outrage unreasonable and unfathomable.

Well, I'd actually wager the places in the US with sizable Muslim populations (major metropolitan areas especially NYC, Michigan, etc.) are not the problem either...

Move the goalposts much? We have more than 6 around me (and yes, I'm quite sure a lot less than many other countries, I'll concede that) and we don't have outrage (disproportionate or otherwise). Tar all Americans with one brush, indeed. Tell me, are all your countrymen in 100% agreement with you? The disdain just drips off your lofty pronouncements about us uncouth Americans.

Perhaps the reason we are shocked and outraged is because, for the overwhelming majority, Muslims come and and become mostly American like everybody else? So we're shocked when something like this happens. It's not normal here.

I do know we don't have the **** hitting the fan every so many years like you multiculturalists do.

Good piece in Foreign Affairs about it:
