Earendil did have a personal stake in them, considering that they belonged to his wife Elwings family, and the sons of Feanor were willing to slay them to get them back. But he did prove himself virtuous enough to hold one for eternity.

Ps. How do you get those dots above letters?

I know we were talking about Valars, but I propose to pick our favourite Maiars too.

Tulkas - he has a cool laughter. Melian was also the one character that has always intrigued me. I read Silmarillion after I've read LOTR trilogy. In LOTR, Galadriel has been one of my favourite characters, and Melian is Galadriel 'mentor'. Very cool.

How do you get those dots above letters?

AltGr + ' makes ¨ --- after you've typed that, type the letter on which you want to put those marks.

Can't take what? Silmarillion has (almost) nothing to do with the ROTK...

Just don't read it, Jada [face_devil]

The dots thing wouldn't work for me. I always use it in Word, but now it just wouldn't work.

Ones most useful for Tolkien names are:

    Alt + 130 é
    132 ä
    137 ë
    148 ö
    163 ú
    162 ó
    161 í
    160 á

These are basic Windows codes as far as I know, and for me they work in pretty much all programs. :)

By the way, I meant Maedhros. Still fuzzy on what he actually did, though, but oh well...

A couple of folks picked Maedhros, I guess some information about him were posted here...

Maedhros is eldest of Fëanor's sons, and the one who loses his right hand after Morgoth captures him and hangs him off the front face of Thangorodrim by it. The chain can't be broken, so eventually his rescuer (I can't remember straight off who, and I've lent my Silmarillion to someone)cuts Maedhros's hand off above the wrist to free him.

I always thought that episode was fantastic. Maedhros is a cool character, and seems to be the only genuinely intelligent one of Fëanor's brood. A great general and fine warrior who had the misfortune to be born to a father with an ego problem. :p

He seemed to be the only one who could fight the will of the oath of Feanor. However, it was better that he passed on the Kingship - Fingolfin was the better leader. My favourite of the elves, in fact.

Yeah, cutting the hand off was a great idea. A bit of macabre here and there have never hurted killed anyone :D

Agreed. I loved the character of Feanaro, however I adored the breed. Too much of them, I suppose. I guess how did it happen while Feanor and Nerdanel have become estranged from each other quite soon [face_thinking] :p

There were 3 ages of stars after the Elves came to the undying lands, each a few thousand years (I think) so seven children doesn't sound like too great a task.

Elves don't believe in 'populate or perish' it seems

They're the next thing to immortal, so even if the bi-millennial battles wipe out a few hundred or thousand, there's plenty left and plenty of time to bring the population back up to normal. Plus, the seven sons Fëanor and Nerdanel did produce seems like quite a lot of kids. And they cause enough trouble for ten times as many people [face_plain]

The only one that I can seem to recall is Celebrimbor, son of Curufin. I thought the others didn't have children.

Yeah, Celebrimbor was the only grandson of Feänor. He is the maker of the 3 Elven Rings.

Maedhros is a very cool character. It is very tragic, though, becouse he is very intelligent and not so blinded by the Oath and the revenge as much as some of his brothers, but in the end he didn't have a choice. The Oath could never be broken and payed the price for his father's sins.

I think Maedhros and Maglor got the rawest deal out of Fëanor's sons; Maglor we don't know as much about, but when he does get a mention he seems like a contemplative, aesthetic kind rather than a warrior - nothing like his dad.

Of the other five, Caranthir isn't around much, Amrod and Amras likewise; Celegorm and Curufin get plenty of narrative, but mainly for the wrong things. It's those two that seem to have inherited Fëanor's ego and his stubbornness - that total refusal to admit a) that the world does not revolve around them and b) that they might be wrong. Although despite being unpleasant, Curufin always struck me as an interesting character; clever and rather more of a schemer than most other Elves. Definitely the brains of the pair - Celegorm isn't much more than an arrogant thug.

I just finished it. The first half I only half understood (Probably due to being tired and my habit of skim reading boring bits, and getting distracted), and as such didn't like. However, everything from Turin and Nienor onwards was brilliant. Although I couldn't help but laugh at some bits (What you get for having read the psuedo-Monty Python 15 minute version before the actual book :p )

I didn't really like Maglor or Maedhros, I got the impression that they were going along all too freely, although Tolkien's style doesn't take a form of which individuals thoughts are able to be presented. Fëanor and all of his sons I didn't like much. I think that the best character was Maeglin, just because he seemed like he knew what he was doing, even when he betrayed Gondolin. Beren and Luthien just plain rule :p Finrod was also a good charcter.

Still, the best bit has got to be:

NIENOR: You mean he's really my brother? Ewwwww!!! *jumps off cliff*

TURIN: You mean she really was my sister? Ewwwww!!! *jumps onto sword*

    :p
