how were any of those characters used pointlessly?

 

Phasma was pretty much non-existent and a huge disappointment.
Hux was so inconsequential his part ended up being forgettable.
Maz was a third rate Yoda imitation whose impact on the story ended up being far less than people had hoped.

 

Rose, Holdo and DJ could simply be added to be disposable, they don't want to lose a popular character such as Finn or Poe but there has to be some threat to the heroes.

 

not every character can be a a main character. that doesn't mean they are wasted. i guess all the ot bit part characters were wasted too? like the bounty hunters, jabba's minions, etc?

 

it just occurred to me that r2 is probably the resistance's best hacker. and he's on ahch-to.

 

Wasn't there a thread that was nearly 50 pages that speculated on the role of that guy who ended up being just a Kanji Klub fellow? His name was Pip something?

Plus wasn't there a thread for RO speculating on the role of a character that turned out to be Vader's anxiety-ridden butler?

 

Thinking back to the loooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnngggggg discussion about "the man in the black hood" aka the butler still puts a smile on my face. Sooooooooooo much speculation over a nothing character! Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!

 

Amen. "Wasted!" and "lazy!" are two of the most conversation-killing words in fandom.

 

Yeah.

Pip Andersen. He wasn't in Kanji Klub but was credited as being the Lead Stormtrooper. He and Crystal Clarke got casting announcements and reports had him at various locations during filming. He ended up being in a lot of TFA, just in Stormtrooper gear playing the guy that smears blood on Finns helmet or being the trooper Rey shoots in the forest of Takodana. He was also into parkour which made some (including myself) think that particular skill was why he was cast. Turned out it had nothing to do with his roles.

Max von Sydow got a casting announcement too. Awful rumors suggested he would be playing the ultimate villain or even Boba Fett. In the end his character wasn't named until post production, he was a good guy, and he died minutes into the film. Some said that was a waste, but I think they just wanted a notable actor to give the character some weight. People also thought Domhnall Gleeson would be playing Luke Skywalker's son and speculating otherwise was ridiculous because you don't cast someone like Gleeson to play a supporting character. But sometimes you need people to play the Captain Panaka's and Sio Bibbles.

 

Man, Canto Bight is shaping up to be my most anticipated segment of the film.

 

with the amount of density in frame in stills and teasers, there's bound to be at least some easter eggs or cameos.

 

Yep it will be nice to get a casino scene.

 

It's the whole thing. Casino, city by the bay, race horses, police chases. Just a different thing from what we've seen in Star Wars, while also looking and feeling exactly like Star Wars. At the very least, the art department nailed it.

 

And Rian explicitly requested R2 to be there.

 

I wonder if Daniel Craig's stormtrooper will be there?

 

The OT bit characters didn't get that type a publicity push. Different times I guess, but I suppose my point is based upon early hype we were expecting those individuals in TFA to be more than bit characters. Phasma and Hux especially weren't vital to the narrative in any meaningful way.

Boba Fett had a huge push in the lead-up to ESB.

 

DJ is the type of guy to say "both sides!" when talking about mass murdering neo-fascists and people who resist them.

It weren't the fans' minds that led to Phasma and her image being almost as marketed as Kylo's before the release of TFA. This includes a coin collector's set, one which didn't include Finn but did include Phasma. In retrospect nothing about her part in TFA justified the publicity push given her. Also plenty of publicity went to Hux too as well as many interviews granted to the actor who played him. This is not something normally done for bit part characters. And yet it is hard to recall a memorable moment involving Hux in The Force Awakens. There are like a dozen other characters whom going into TFA those of us within the SW fanbase had little expectations for. Such as Billie Lourd and Greg Grunberg's characters. There was no buzz about those guys, no countless number of interviews done with them going in. But expectations were much higher for Maz, Phasma and Hux.

It is possible they are keeping his full name under wraps; I think this might be his splicer nickname or handle.

 

DJ's pop figure looks like it will be excellent for seemingly silently judging guests from across the room.
