Is it scientifically plausible that a gas giant could have a habitable layer?

And there are native species to Bespin, but it's a gas giant! How can anything evolve without land or bodies of water?

Not many things in Star Wars is scientifically plausible... adventures inside a space slug anyone...? that's why it's a fairy tale set in space :p

Short simple answer - gas giants are a general "term" used to refer to all extremely large planets in sci-fi. In real science, it would be very unlikely to have a habitable layer (like a 100% solid layer, beyond the core).

In Star Wars and other sci-fi stories, it is, because the definition is different.

A layer of oxygen-nitrogen atmosphere though, may not be entirely out of the question.
