Best Game Ever?

Hard one... probably a four way tie between Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Crazy Taxi, Super Mario Brothers 3, and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.

Why is Crazy Taxi there? Doesn't it get incredibly boring after a while?

 

A while in this case being about 10 minutes.

 

Perhaps it's because I was in my "video game prime" when it was released, GoldenEye ranks as the best game ever. Yeah, there have technically been "better" games released in terms of graphics and gameplay and whatnot, but the fact that I was 13 and totally in love with both the game and the Bond franchise at the time makes up for where it was lacking. I have my PlayStation neatly tucked away; I haven't played it in years. Periodically, however, I pull out my N64 and play GoldenEye (or, as we all called it, "Bond"), with a few buddies late into the night.

By far the funnest multiplayer game I've ever owned.

Best game I've ever played in terms of gameplay and graphics and technical merit: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

For the consoles, there's too many to choose from but Myst is the best PC game ever IMO.

 

KOTOR and metroid prime ranks pretty high on my eyes

 

For me it will always be The Legend of Zelda The Ocarina of Time. That was the first video game I played and I have so many vivid memories of trying to beat the Deku Tree with my friends. (I was 7 at the time)

Runner up would have to be Chrono Trigger, and The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past.

 

Choosing just one is way too hard, so there's four I'll mention. I'm assuming the premise of this thread is to choose games that were the 'best of the time period'.

Wing Commander -- The only problem here is I don't know whether to choose I, II, or III. All three were fantastic.
X-Wing vs Tie Fighter -- This was the first time I got involved in a game within a community, so I probably had more fun with this than any of the others in this list.
Age of Empires II (and The Conquerors expansion) -- This was the second time I played in a community; this time with a group of friends in multiplayer.
Choplifter for the Commodore Vic-20 -- This was the best 'translation' of an arcade game to a computer platform I've ever seen. I played the same game on a half dozen other platforms, and was incredibly surprised that the Vic-20 version was the best! (This is a computer that only had 3.5Kb of RAM, although I believe this game required the 8Kb memory expansion)

i would have to also say that and Mario 64, for breaking the 2D to 3D cross over and doing it right.

I couldn't pick a favorite, but...

Chrono Trigger, Metal Gear Solid, Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Final Fantasy VI would be in my top ten.

 

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention Age of Empires II and it's SW spinoff Galactic Battlegrounds.

Street Fighter II Turbo (1993, SNES)

I have never played a game as much as this one. Its replay factor is infinite, it's loads of fun, the gameplay is just brilliant and unmatched when it comes to fighting games, even a decade later, and I love the artistry in the environments and characters. Speaking of characters, there's never been a cooler and more memorable cast of fighters than the ones in SF2.

Donkey Kong Country- The one that started me on the road to being a gamer is STILL my favorite. Donkey Kong's grand return, the rebirth of the SNES, and the father of all 3D games, DKC is the BEST GAME EVER.
