I don't think Hoth was a cakewalk at first. The rebels took down 2 walkers.

Yeah, all it took was a Skywalker to make the battle just a little less one sided.

The Battle of Hoth is the best. The fast pace, the fear that the walkers create, and Luke's resilience. I like that Luke keeps going even when he is without a ship. A perfect example of how to use a lightsaber for a dramatic and purposeful effect.

It's possible the plan was to nuke the Hoth base from orbit until 2 things happened:

    1. The admiral screwed up and came out of hyperdrive too close allowing the rebels to get their shields up.
    2. Vader sensed that Skywalker was on Hoth hence did not want to nuke it.

That's also the reason why once the shields go down Vader doesn't nuke the base and instead goes there personally. To find Skywalker.

So if you look at it that way it all makes sense.

As for the escapes, the Millennium Falcon did not get away easily. The asteroid field was a natural barrier for any ship but Han went in anyway.

I presume Luke got away in the X-wing while the imperials were distracted with the Falcon.

Battle of Hoth, by a 100 parsecs! :)

Battle of Geonosis was needless action and pointlessness thrown in the viewers face. I hated it!

Battle of Hoth, Battle of Endor, and Battle of Takodana are a 3-way tie for me.... I loved the Gungans vs Droids and Geonosis battles though. If I had to pick one battle from the PT, I loved the most it would be the battle on Naboo.

If we include Rogue One then it's got to be Scarif. If we go main saga only then I would probably have to go with Hoth also.

Just curious, but why is this not on the poll? Should it be?

The thread started before Rogue One came out, so only the other film's battles are in the poll.

    Scarif and Hoth for me.

While the battles in the prequel trilogy were epic in scope, they ultimately lacked a vital element- suspense. This was because we weren't simply weren't invested in the Clones and Gungans. It's hard to care too much about two totally disposable armies fighting each other with characters we either don't know or (in the case of the Gungans) don't even like. On the other hand, the audience is invested and cares about the Rebels, and there's beloved characters fighting right on the front lines, making the action seem more relevant. At Geonosis and Naboo, everything plot relevant happens away from the battlefield, so it just seems like a distraction.

Hoth and Scaif are on a completely different level from all others.

The scene (including the wonderful Williams music) where the AT-ATs in TESB are shown advancing towards the fleeing rebels on Hoth is fantastic scene and conveys the perfect emotion to the viewer:
