I'm surprised by all the hatred for Sucker Punch. I thought it was a bad movie and a failure, but unlike so many movies it at least failed in novel and interesting ways, at least failed ambitiously rather than just being dully awful.

It made awesome things boring, for this, it must suffer. [face_devil]

Drive is my favorite that I have seen with The Help running up 2nd. I haven't seen Tinker Tailor yet but it opens at my theater Friday and I hear that it is super good too.

It's a film that provides endless, interminable action which is ultimately irrelevant and provides no progression whatsoever, presented as a tone-deaf roar of sight and sound that means nothing. Couched in a series of awful covers that are supposedly "clever," and "ironic" (again, Snyder's use of soundtrack is unbearably paint-by-numbers), and populated by a phalanx of horrendous, so-bad-they're-just-plain-bad performances (with the notable exception of Oscar Isaac, who looks like he'd rather be anywhere else).

It's Baz Lurhman meets Simon West. It's catastrophic.

Ok, here's the first version of my list (there are still several prestige flicks I ahven't seen, in addition to a few more mainstream fare that I meant to see but missed in theaters, like Limitless & Bridesmaids).

With my lists I'm generall balancing quality with enjoyability- often this comes down to me asking the question "Would i rather watch this film again or this film? So, superhero fare is gonna go higher, while the more prestigious dramas get spread out across the list.

So, think of this as more of a "Favorite Films of 2011" than a "Best Films".

    1) Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
    2) Hugo
    3) Thor
    4) Captain America: The First Avenger
    5) Super 8
    6) The Adjustment Bureau
    7) Source Code
    8) X-Men: First Class
    9) Fast Five
    10) Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
    11) A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas
    12) Battle: Los Angeles
    13) The Mechanic
    14) Adventures of Tin Tin
    15) Moneyball
    16) Real Steel
    17) Immortals
    18) The Hangover Part 2
    19) Horrible Bosses
    20) Rango

This next section are the films that were either good but with some severe problems or bad wih redeeming qualities:
(I've reevaluated some films from earlier posting so there's some slight tweaks here)

    21) The Muppets
    22) Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows, part 2
    23) Transformers: Dark of the Moon
    24) Cowboys & Aliens
    25) Paranormal Activity 3
    26) War Horse
    27) The Thing
    28) Green Lantern
    29) Rise of the Planet of the Apes
    30) Killer Elite
    31) Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

These were the ones that have some moments or elements of note but were basically misfires on the whole:

    32) Conan the Barbarian
    33) Your Highness
    34) Green Hornet
    35) Drive

And these two are terrible, despite some great visuals:

    36) Priest
    37) Sucker Punch

I really loved Beginners, so that's been my favorite film of the year.

    After that, I enjoyed:
    Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Jane Eyre (the 2011 version, obviously)
    Midnight In Paris
    Sarah's Key
The Trip (I know this was a 2010 TV show, but it didn't come out in the US until 2011 and it was in film form)

    1. Drive
    2. Melancholia
    3. Martha Marcy May Marlene

Does "13 Assassins" count for 2010 or 2011? I found it in 2011, but i see a lot of conflicting release dates online. Anyways if it fits, it would be my #4.

I'll be spending the next few months catching up on 2011 movies. Melancholia may have been my favorite. Or Bridesmaids, but they're very similar of course.

I have to rent Moneyball and then Drive when it comes out.

Oh, I forgot to add Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to my list. Hmm, I'd probably rank it somewhere near, but probably above, War Horse.

I would say that I enjoyed these films the most:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
    War Horse
    Black Swan
    The Tourist
    Eat, Pray, Love

In no particular order, except for Warrior and The Help, being number 1 and 2. Still need to see Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

    Warrior
    The Help
    X-Men First Class
    Kings Speech
    Bridesmaids
    (It was funny.)
    Super 8
    Transformers 3

There's so much I need to catch up on but if I were to give a top 3 it would be something like

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 2
    Moneyball.

I also enjoyed the Help very much.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is my 2011 pick for sure. Amazing film. I can't imagine that anything else from this year's crop would top it. Now it's an unbearable wait for the Blu-Ray/DVD release. Warrior would be my number two, but I haven't seen a lot of this year's prestige flicks yet.

UK release is tomorrow, which I'll be ordering in. If you can play region free stuff, then it's a good bet.

The Artist, Rise of the Planet of the Apes & Drive.

I enjoyed X-Men First Class a lot and Tinker Tailor Solider Spy (Gary Oldman for Oscar glory [face_praying] )
