PT Best opening sequence of the PT?

Couldn't disagree more. It makes no sense at all for one movie to "buck the trend". But I guess if any film was going to do it, it would be what is generally regarded as the poorest of them.

 

But there's no 'up' or 'down' in space.

 

Hey, if it works for you, then great. It would be dull if we all liked the same things.

For me, there are some things you don't mess with. Star Wars starts with "A long time ago", then has the music, the fading away title, the opening scroll, and the pan down. That's how a SW movie starts. Change for change's sake is not a good thing. In my opinion of course. I fully expect someone to chime in with an essay on how this is wonderfully symbolic etc, but for me it doesn't work. So please, don't bother

 

I prefer TPM's opening most from a visuals and pacing stand point. I think the dialouge is stilted though. AotC's opening seems a bit too slow and RotS is waaay too busy for me to really bother trying to follow much. Plus, battles aren't why I watch/read.

 

The first 10 minutes of The Phantom Menace, from the Ship approaching the battle station, to the Droid invasion of Naboo, is pure gold to me. It would make a fine act 1 of any film, and sets up almost all we need to know with impressive efficiency. Everything about it is absolutely perfect.

 

Even though AOTC is by far my least fave it is one of my favourite first few seconds, the pan up, the reflective beauty of the spinning silver ships going into the clouds....AOTC has some amazingly beautiful moments in it... ROTS is stunning and its opening sequence just never stops....

 

As much as I love the ROTS opening (it is my favorite movie of all time), I gotta go with the TPM opening. Two jedi boarding the TF station, get attacked and fight back and show the jedi skills back in the heyday. The music is awesome and everything about it is perfect.

 

ROTS for me.. but the others are really cool. TPM is the most solid overall (and the droidekas really impressed me). AOTC is pretty cool looking and I was actually impressed with the ships reorienting themselves to Coruscant.. at the time that was a relatively novel thing to see in sci-fi movies. Hitherto, space ships tended to all fly on the same invisible galaxy-wide space ocean.

 

ROTS has a fantastic opening. The opening shot is magnificent and probably the most impressive shot of the PT in terms of the scale of it. The battle itself is pretty madcap and the buzz droids were unnecessary, but everything else right through to the crash landing on Coruscant is fantastic stuff. The pace is break-neck and it's executed extremely well.

TPM is a nice start to the film, but a bit laboured and silly really. Could have done without all the talky stuff before the action as well. Never a good idea to start a SW film with talky scenes.

AOTC is easily the worst as it has no real big memorable opening at all. The ship explodes, and that's it really. It really saps a lot of momentum away.

2. AOTC - I love the music and visuals for this opening sequence. The fog over Coruscant and the silver ships are beautiful.

The best in the PT is TPM's opening. I love the music and the newness of everything. The only things recognizable are lightsabers. Well done.

 

I know some don't like it, but I never really had any specific expectation as to what I'd see there. I loved the pan-up. I also have a feeling that we might see some different direction(s) at some point in the ST as well. I wouldn't mind a pan-sideways...

For me, ROTS is the most exhilarating opening sequence of any film-ever! We're just literally ... thrown into the action. I love the ominus pan down/drums, and as the starfighters came over the edge of the star destroyer, we suddenly see all hell is breaking loose-and the momentum doesn't stop until 20 minutes in, once Palpatine finally lands at the senate building...

I remember the first time I saw that in theaters-I literally felt like I had to catch my breath just from watching it...

I really enjoyed TPM, when Qui-gon and Obi-Wan emerged from the gas-filled room and totally owned the battle droids I was almost in tears - my beloved Star Wars was back. That said, my favourite is ROTS - it was simply awesome! I could never get tired of watching it. Space action, rescue action, lightsabre duel, escape, more dueling and then crash-landing the ship with the fireships etc. all followed by Obi-Wan's understated comment "Another happy landing'. It is the best I've ever seen.

 

ROTS by far has the best opening of the entire Saga in my opinion.

Without any doubt, for me the best opening sequence in the entire prequel trilogy, but even in the entire saga (Episodes 1 to 6) is the Revenge of the Sith opening. ROTS was the first Star Wars movie I ever saw and this gigantic space battle over Coruscant blew me away. When I first saw this space battle, for me this was "Star Wars" truly meant!

 

What meaning does it convey?

 

ROTS probably has my favourite opening in all six movies. The score, SFX, and battle sequences made it all very impressive and gave a sense of scale to the war, but Anakin and Obi Wan's banter and coordinated flight movements made it clear that they were closer than in AOTC and this was their story. It's a nice contrast, the problems of two men against this giant spectacle. And very funny - especially after the awesome score, the fighting, the professionalism, then Obi Wan just gives up and goes "Ugh flying".

 

Revenge of the Sith has the best opening scene in all Prequels, hands down, in my opinion.

 

As much as you want it to.

 

So, none then.

 

Personally, I never saw the need to pan up. It just looks more like an attempt at creativity than actual creativity. I do like the sleek ship, though. And the yellow S1 escorts immediately remind the viewer that we are coming off of Episode I.

ROTS, though, is easily my favorite prequel opening.

 

Like many other people here, the opening from Revenge of the Sith is my favorite.
I love it when the camera pans down to the Republic Cruiser, with Coruscant in the background, and there is a moment of silence (only those awesome drums can be heard)!
Then suddenly, two Jedi Interceptors come flying in and the exiting music starts to play!

'Two starfighters. Jedi-starfighters. Just two. Two is enough.'

 

The beginning of the ROTS novels helps. That was amazing.
