Hey, what's you favorite Trailer score?

I'm a big fan of the Spider Man II trailer music, as well as "Here Comes the King" for Narnia

Agreed. "Here Comes the King" was excellent. "Gothic Power" is good, when it's not overused, as are the theme from Dragonheart and the theme from Rudy... whihc is probably why they are overused. Music from Chicken Run can be good sometimes, and the 'Drop Zone' music used for Pirates of the Caribbean and the Mask of Zorro is great.

Also: the creation theme from Frankenstein (Haunted Mansion,) the Treasure Planet map music (Narnia), The Wrath of Kahn's 'Battle In The Mutara Nebula' (some Star Trek trailers), The 'Light of the Force' Vader Armor burning theme (Tydirium, the fanfilm), the choral chanting from the Prologue of Anastastia (Which you can hear as one of the clips in the Film Music Quiz thread (shameless plug #1)), and the music for the end of the Legend of Zorro trailer, even though no one in the "What is the name of that music cue/track" thread can figure out what it is. (Shameless plug #2.) I'm a huge trailer fan, so I may try to think of some more, later.

Nice idea for a thread, by the way.

"Bishop's Countdown" from Aliens is one of, if not the most used film cue in movie trailer history. It works really well, so it's not surprising.

I remember also really enjoying the use of "Tarawa" from Snow Falling on Cedars in The Matrix Revolution's teaser. The drums at the end were particularly cool.

I prefer when film trailers use actual film music rather than specially composed music. Most of the time, especially lately, it sounds like crap. Case in point is the music in the recent Pirates of the Caribbean 2 trailer. It sounds awful and exactly like every other blockbuster movie's trailer music. Although, Spider-Man 2's trailer had a really effective piece of original music to back it.

Ballroom Blitz worked well for the Kung Fu Hustle... but it only works for lighter tones, I think.

Also, the 'Egg Travels' opening from Disney's Dinosaur works excellently for it's own trailer (essentially the scene it was scored for), but it also works tremendously well for other trailers looking for an epic theme.

I liked the pirate strailer theme as well, and the new Spidey 3 one, "Tempest" I think...

"The 1960s: The Turbulent Years" from Nixon is about as good as trailer music gets.

The James Bond: Casino Royale trailer has an excellent rendition of the James Bond Theme.

I am not a huge fan of trailor music. Though I have been impressed from time to time. And some snippets are amplified in my mind by the use of them in trailors. What really dissapoints me is when trailors use other film music in them. Not songs like "Raindrops keep falling on my head.". But Total Recall's theme was used in a Vietnam Movie trailor. And worst of all the music from "Children of Dune" was co-opted for one in the trailor for one of the IMHO worst movies EVER "Master and Commander".

Trailers should feature music from the film, the franchise, or something original - and if original music is not written, it should at least be relatively obscure. I'm sick of action movie after action movie introducing itself with one of those power anthems. People go to the movies and get addicted to the rush of excitement; they want to experience it over and over again. In my mind, nothing could be less exciting than such repetition.

Let's retire "Gothic Power" and "Requiem for a Dream," already.

I can't agree with you about trailer music as a whole (sometimes an awesome trailer with someone else's music is all a poorly written or poorly scored film has,) but I'll second the vote for retiring. After the LOTR trailers, any other usage would just be a downhill trip. ;)

    What Cerrabore said.

Everything looks and sounds the same these days. Generic.

I must admit trailer music is all a bit samey. See PotC 2 trailer for perfect example: Blasting Choral piece that does not relate to the movie, (There was no Duel of the Fates-esque choral piece in PotC 2 was there?) Climaxes too quickly and is accompanied by bog standard fast cuts of the best bits of the film. It seems that most blockbuster film trailers these days follow that very formula (Ep. III, PotC 2, James Bond Casino Royale, Spiderman 2) which is not a showcase of originality. I prefer just a single scene as a trailer eg. The Lion King which was almost the entire "Circle of Life" opening sequence. This intriuges the audience more without giving away any of the best bits (which most blockbuster trailers seem to do.) I think a good rule of thumb for trailers is to not feature any footage from the film's climax. That part should be saved and kept under wraps until the noble cinema-goer actully buys the ticket and sees the movie.

Boy have I raved on a bit... So there's my few cents.

I certainly agree that trailers should use original score from that particular film if possible. And if not, find something appropriate that's not so cliché.

Whether original or from another movie,I have always thought that the trailer music for "Dragon:The Bruce Lee Story" was awesome.

    Anyone?

I agree with most of what you guys have said. The pirates trailer music was just "in your face" action the whole time. To me, the best trailer music is focused on a major theme, and not just random music.

I think that film music is evolving away from fanfares and some trailers are following it.
A good example would be Batman Begins. After watching the movie or the trailer, you probably wont remember the music. Its just not memorable. But if you watch again and listen closly there are important themes used over and over. They just arent exploited.

I dont know where i was going with that...

    My votes,
    Rudy
Tyrannos (always has been a fave but just found out what its called in the "whats this que" thread!)
    Glory
    Requiem for a Tower
    Dragonheart
    Shawshank Redemption

The music from the trailer of the original Pirates of the Caribbean was pretty good, and I think it was an original piece. A more bombastic version of "He's a Pirate", which is exactly what I loved about the soundtrack itself.

No, that's merely the most comon music misconception. Ever. Check out the trailer for the Mask of Zorro, and you'll hear the exact same music. (Unless we're talking about a different trailer...) From the film Drop Zone, I believe.

Lots of the trailer music that everyone is talking about came from the X-Ray Dog group. They are a group of artists and composers specializing in trailer music.

I really like the use of the instrumental version of Sigur Ros's Hoppipolla in the "Children of Men" trailer!
