This is the thread that just won't die
It just goes on and on, 'know why?
    Some people started posting here,

Stars, stars, stars, blah, blah, blah, who cares. As a wise Jedi once said, "Jedi don't crave these things!"

Ok I know there is more to this quote but I just wanted to get to my point!;)

See, this thread is like being in grammer school. At least that's my take on it - not sure about the guy who started it. He's a weirdo anyway.

    But, I digress, let's begin, I'll start------->

So I'm at my friend's house on Saturday night/Sunday morning, and we get on the topic of the best movies of the year (actually, the topic was "don't tell me you're mixing bourbon with Sierra Mist", but we segued out of that.) I have yet to see three films that I'm very optomisitc about (Traffic; Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon; and Requiem for a Dream) but with those possible exceptions, I came to the conclusion that the best film of 2000 was "High Fidelity."

One of the reasons a lot of my friends and I loved this movie so much is that it's a superb example of a men's movie. And no, I'm not talking about gay porn or testosterone-laden crap like "Independence Day" (or even testosterone-laden classics like "Predator.")Every once in a while, we get a film that reminds men of how to be Men... films like "The Wild Bunch," "Casablanca," "Hard Eight," "The Limey," "L.A. Confidential," and another Cusak film, "Say Anything." The main thing these films have in common is that they all have a hero (or heroes) who are deeply flawed -either criminally, morally, or even socially- but still gain the viewer's sympathy and support because they all know _exactly_ who they are. It is not easy to look in the mirror and be able to tell yourself The Truth, and all these men do that every day. Some of them are at an age where all that's left is for them to pay the price for their lives, sometimes gleefully (see The Wild Bunch and Hard Eight.) The more encouraging of these movies give us characters who are willing to disrupt their entire lives in an attempt to right a wrong before it's too late (Casablanca, L.A. Confidential, High Fidelity.) Murderers, patriots, corrupt lawmen, or Wicker Park @ssholes, these characters are among the highest order of heroes because they teach an invaluable lesson, and they teach it by example: good, bad or both, a Man does not pretend to be something he isn't, and a Man does not deny what he is. If this lesson is learned early enough, it can lead to change and improvement. If it's learned too late, it can at least help to bring an inner peace, if not an outer one (see The Limey.)

Y'know, in the good ol' days, I just know Penguin would've started a whole new topic for this kind of thing. On this board, I'm surprised he still bothers to make the occasional post that isn't shorter than his sigs.

Geez, LP, that's heavy! I think we now need (at least I do, as I've been guilt-ridden lately, and that post just sunk it in a little deeper, even tho I am NOT a man) another spontaneous musical interlude.

    Twinkle, twinkle, little star...

Not to be an intentional poopy-head, but I just found out that Kristy MacColl died yesterday. For those of you who don't know the name (a friend had to jog my memory for me) she was best known for singing (along with Shane MacGowan) the one of the greatest ballads in the history of Irish musc: "The Fairytale of New York" by the Pogues.

I heard that last night. I'm not big on knowing her and her music, but I did hear that she wrote a bunch of stuff with the Smiths. So in that regard, she's cool.

I just want to say that I highly recommend Requiem for a Dream. It's a very dark film that takes you down several characters' descent into addiction. The choices of sounds and images really grabs you.

I also really enjoyed High Fidelity. I'm not sure if I'd rank it as best of the year yet, mainly because there's still some films I haven't seen yet. And I really loved Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai by Jim Jarmusch. Plus, the Coen Brothers have a new movie coming out, O Brother Where Art Thou? I can't wait for that to be released. Michael Wilmington already placed that film as his favorite of the year. I'll just have to see.

just wanted to concur with phil on Ghost Dog!
i loved that movie. altho the ending is one of those that you wish didn't go that way but you know that it couldn't have been any different.

and Hi Infidelity was so excellent. that movie is one reason why a main goal of mine right now is saving up for kick@$$ car stereo, my plan is to get one that'll play mp3s on cd. i've been without tunes for far too long...

I'm officially sick of this "star" crap given out for droning on and on. The next time I want to be given a grade-school style reward for doing grade-school style garbage, I'll go back to high school.

Screw this "star" sh!t, I wanna be a Jedi again...

I agree, unless they turn the star into those shiny foil ones they would stick to your forehead in grammer school like some Hollywood & Vine 7-11 owner. Those were cool.

Plus, I tend to associate stars with movie reviews which gives the impression of being a very bad movie, since three stars is generally a good review. Not that I have my first star yet. So, for now, I'm one of those stinker films that get "Zero stars."

Phil, you may be a zero star movie, but there is one consolation for that: you'll get to be on MST2K! :)

Oh, great. I'm not even bad enough for MST3K. I have to settle for MST2K. :)

And, if I had enough posts for 3 or 4 stars, it would mean I have no life. I don't have one anyway, but I just don't like to advertise that.

    Don't think me unkind
    Words are hard to find
The only cheques I've left unsigned
From the banks of chaos in my mind
And when their eloquence escapes me
Their logic ties me up and rapes me

De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
They're meaningless and all that's true

    Poets, priests and politicians
Have words to thank for their positions
Words that scream for your submission
And no one's jamming their transmission
'Cos when their eloquence escapes you
Their logic ties you up and rapes you

De do do do, de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do, de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
