From Geov Parrish's "This Day in Radical History":

1888: The body of Mary Ann Nichols, the first victim of London serial killer "Jack the Ripper" is found murdered and mutilated in Buck's Road. The East End of London sees five more victims of the murderer over the next three months; while a royal figure is suspected, no one is ever nailed. Today, in the U.S., such a spree would soon be forgotten.

1997 - Private citizen (and former princess) Diana Spencer is killed in the world's most celebrated case of murderous drunken driving, Paris. Millions weep for no apparent reason.

Got this from the ChicagoLineParty (Chicago's LotR Fanclub). It's the same month (though not weekend) as CIII unfortunately, so I'm guessing many of us will be saving our credits. Still, there's enough geekiness to spread around I'm sure.

Well, it looks like Chicago is going to be host to a great LOTR convention this coming April. My attention was drawn to this by a friend from England, no less.
Here is info from the website:

I was looking for info on the costume parade, and found some other stuff that could be of CF interest:

This doesn't look to have anything to do with Star Wars...but the name is cool.

The Sleeping Beauty crew participated in this last year, as did Kathy and Quincy. Crazy parade, not particularly well organized, you basically march down Halsted street between Belmont and Addison. Crazy, but a lot of fun. The parade itself was at night last year.

I know about the State Street Children's Costume Parade....a huge contingent of 501st and RL members showed up last year...only to have the parade cancelled by the tragic fire in the County Building across the street from the Plaza....
so the 501st members conducted their own parade that day.....
unfortunately....the October 23 date also conflicts with a huge fundraiser that the MWG does in Wisconsin...so there probably will be some MWG members in the Children's Costume Parade....

For me....well...restoration workdays have begun..and open Saturdays are pretty much a thing of the past till June 2005.....I usually have only one open Saturday per month...October's open Saturday is the 16th.....there is talk of doing another "impromptu" parade on the 16th....

    Oh, I am there, baby!

P.S. Dear FanForce - thank you for limiting the length of the URL in a LINK tag. While at some point this was probably a valid security device, in today's environment of PHP/ASP/Java indexed news databases it is really more annoying than helpful. Thank you for providing this wonderful look into the time that was, the history of the Internet, when men were men and users wrote their own device drivers...

What's worse, that I actually am going back to Le Peng suggested thread when I have more time to read the whole thing, or the fact that when I scrolled down and saw the author's name (BlackZarck) I realized I recognized him?

Ha... looks like the Transformer fan's universe is a small world after all, even if the show's universe is staggeringly complex.

By pure coincidence, my parents are in town this week, and they brough with them a buncha early birthday presents. Among the pile of "we saw these toys on sale and thought you'd like em" are two Transformer "Commemorative Collection" figures. I haven't owned (pwned?) a Transformer in at least a decade, so I've been having some fun making Thundercracker chase Jazz and the dog around the apartment.

Even the dog thinks I need a life...

No ******-boy, I meant it was profound cinema that changed my entire point of view about life.

I mean it's really sweet animation and a cool song. And if I have to go...that's how I want it to end.....with two hot ghosts chicks in an orgasmic explosion over a haunted mansion.

BTW, you're almost 30 and couldn't animate a stick figure jumping rope in a flip-book.
