If they can pull if off as advertised, then they might actually have something that'll attract business to their system.

The thing I wonder about is if Sony is truly ready to deal with creating (and potentially policing) an online community of that scale. Basically, it's chatrooms done in a 3-D virtual environment. I'm sure it'll attract kids in swarms. At the same time, where the kids go, so go the preditors.

Is Sony, after so long with their heads seemingly in the sand, really ready for the sort of things (good and bad) that creating such an expansive community can bring? Are they going to be monitoring everything (including the so-called private chats back at members "houses") or are they going to have a more laid back moderating style? And what will they do when the first MySpace-like reports of sexual preditors talking to and luring underage players is thrown across the media? (After all, MySpace started with the same sort of basic idea...a place for people to keep up with friends, meet new friends, and share pictures, video, and music...)

Again, I think this has good potential. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if chatrooms and boards of the future end up in a 3-D interactive environment of some sort. I just hope Sony not only delivers what they promise (so far their track record with the PS3 ain't too good) and they actually have an idea what they're getting themselves potentially in for. ;)

I think that given the time, probably 1-2 years, we will see the PS3 ready to really be gauged against the other consoles. Playstation's are notorious for having quirky system architecture that annoy developers for a long while before they start to really get into the nitty gritty of programming for the console. The PS3's got the horses, of that there's no doubt. But so did the Neo Geo and the 3DO. Anyone remember those? Neo Geo did alright as a rich kid perfect arcade port platform. 3DO, if I remember correctly, was beefier then the Genesis and the SNES back in the day. I don't remember how well it did, but I don't think I ever saw a system on store shelves.

The other problem is that the PS3 is Sony's way of pushing their Blu-Ray format. I'd like to direct your attention back to the Beta-Max dilemma. The Beta-Max player was a superior VCR machine, compared to the VHS, and Sony's brainchild. My Dad bought a Beta back in the day and I remember him talking about it (he was in that sort of industry - video/photo/print)... but it tanked. Then, lets look at the PSP's UMD format. PSP once again created a new format for media. It's doing OK, I guess. The PSP's still selling, although it seems the DS is outperforming it. Again, because the PSP's mostly had a thin library of ports, with a few outstanding titles - GTA Liberty City and GTA Vice City stories... personally, I own a DS and play it occasionally and use an iPod for my music.

But I digress. The point is that Sony's got to get the games and not rest on brand recognition, horsepower, or an alternative media format to sell systems. Nintendo's Gamecube had it's own discs, but they were game discs (only, I believe) and a very cost effective format. So far, they've not got that much in terms of EXCLUSIVE universally recognized games. Resistance: Fall of Man (I think that's its name) hasn't gotten a standing ovation - lot of players/store employees have said it's OK or even kind of mediocre. The GTA franchise is launching IV on both 360 and PS3 on day one. Metal Gear Solid 4 is so far an exclusive. It's a pretty potent franchise, but with recent trends of Microsoft hamstringing Sony's exclusivity deals who knows? It's really a cruddy situation, because as the console wars have shown a progression to becoming less dependent on exclusive titles and more on what ELSE they can do it's going to depend on the very things we're criticizing: what the system offers besides playing the same games as tom, dick, and harry do. That means touting Blu-Ray, HD, or something else.

So for now, I'm happy with my 360, my Wii, my dusty genesis. But I look forward to just what Sony will do as the Console Wars really start dropping bombs.

P.S. For more information on the state of Sony's PS3, the recent issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly has a article with Sony's USA division president.

Hmmm...perhaps I won't count Sony quite out of the format war just yet...

While the porn industry is a tough nut to crack, Disney is backing Blue Ray. With the amount of movies and cartoons they release (and re-release) each year and their stranglehold on the minds of childen and young-at-heart...that could be a big influence. Especially since they can blitz the various media and store shelves (and their parks) with tons of marketing.

It'll be interesting to see which one ends up having more influence (if any) in determining which media wins out for HD. :p

I don't think either will outright win. The world of media is so fragmented at the moment, the only constant is the fact that we download most of it. I think that will be the ultimate "winner".

I don't think Disney will be that big of a factor- IIRC, they supported Divx over DVD as well, and we all know how that turned out. (granted, Blue Ray isn't anywhere near the bastard of a product Divx was).

Also, I must jump on the little bandwagon and say that LittleBigPlanet has me very interested- it actually looks like Sony is trying something new with that for once, sort of a mix between the Excite Bike editor and Chip 'n Dales' Rescue Rangers. Though it gives me pause with how it doesn't seem to be all that challenging in terms of success or failure- only way I can see not finishing a stage is by choosing to turn it off.

The worst thing is that Sony's fans were so loyal that it was near-impossible to lose them. But extortionate prices, lack of backwards compatibility, the utter disrespect shown to the consumers (particularly the European ones), Blu-ray, the supply problems, the initial delays, etc, etc- there's something in there to alienate every fan.

Anyway, I'm another former fanboy who's gone. Tomorrow I pick up my 360.

    Exactly. That is exactly it.

Before all of this came to light and Sony stuffed their feet ankle-deep into their pieholes, I was very much looking forward to the new PS3. It takes skill of unimagined magnatude to be able to turn off sooo many loyal, rabid fans...but they managed it. :p

Seems the PS3 will be getting an 80GB model in the near future (though it's unclear if it'll be a third model or merely a revision to the $600 model). Kinda ironic, given Sony criticism of the XB-ox Elite announcement, heh.

(and this is not a April Fools joke :p )

I find it ironic that I was a Nintendo loyalist through the 2006 holiday season, waiting in line for a Wii (and getting the first one, booyah!) but then in late February using part of my tax return to buy a PS2. Not a PS3 sorry.

Funny thing is, lately I have been playing the PS2 a heck of a lot more than the Wii. Kingdom Hearts FTW.

It's not that ironic. Wii just launched, it was only a few really must have games on it. PS2 on the other hand has finished it's console life and is packed with awesome games.

I've been playing Resistance lately, and boy, it is the shiz.

I just wish I had a hi-def TV instead of my SVGA projector.

My point was I never did it before. I stuck with Nintendo through the N64 and GCN eras, playing a couple PS2 games on friend's machines but never going much past meh.

The irony is that a lot of staunch PS/PS2 owners are now looking seriously at Nintendo and the Wii, even making the switch (then again, Sony's been pretty much foot in *** for the PS3 problems) and I make the reverse jump.

No, as Blu Laser Cult is a play on Blue Oyster Cult. For that, we'd probably go with something like "Crystal Method" or something ;)

"Do you play like I do?"
    (ohmygod)
    "Play like I do..."

Is the sound horrible on you Blue-Ray movies to? I can hear games fine at my TV's level 9 Volume, but I have to crank the movies to at least 25 and still don't hear them as well as the games. At level 25 my speakers crack a bit so my movie going hasn't been very good. The movie experience is the only thing getting any time on the PS3 anyway.

I'm thinking of getting a current-gen system. But I don't want to spend more than like $400 or so.

I like playing action, adventure, and RPG games...like Prince of Persia, Zelda, Fable, things like that.

So I've been thinking of a 360, but now I'm not sure.

Should I go for the PS3? Or would it be out of my price range?

Unless there's been a price drop, you're not getting a PS3 for $400. And last time the hubby and I were at a Fry's Electronics store they had tons of PS3 games on the shelves...but only like 10 different game titles. A couple of those were newer stuff tied into current movies that you would think would sell better in general, and the shelves were overflowing with them.

Personally, not what I'd take as a good sign when picking up a new game system. I enjoy the same sorts of games you listed, and for me the PS3 doesn't yet have much that lures me. But then again, that might just be me.

While there are a couple good RPG games for the 360 (currently available and soon to come out), you strike me more as getting a better bang for your buck getting a Wii. Assuming you don't already have a GameCube with the game, you could get the latest Zelda game as well as other Nintendo big hitters. Plus the Wii's the cheapest of the three systems.

If nothing else, look online and see what games are available for each system (as well as the cost of each system). Go with what seems to have more games that jump out at you and that you feel you can afford. Or, even better, if you have friends with the systems, go give them a test run...perhaps rent a couple games to see if you really would like them. ;)
