yeah all the keying effects in AE suck...or just always leave a tiny blue or green lining around w/e is being screened.

    i heard keylight was a good plug-in... where can i get it....free?

    It's on the AE CD.

But really, AE's keying effects work alright if you're willing to spend the time in learning how to use them right.

do you know how i can blue screen perfectly with the normal AE plug ins?

    i think i have AE7...

    color difference key
    color key
    color range
    difference matte
    extract
    inner/outer key
    linear color key
    luma key
    spill supressor

thats it..... how do i blue screen good?what would you do to get the annoying line of blue that always stays in?

It depends on the shot, and how well the screen's been shot, really.

And you will very rarely EVER get a perfect key--rotoscoping's going to be involved, more than likely.

You're trying to key compressed footage, that's probably a big part of it. Look closely, you'll see sharpening artifacts.

Okay. You are going to go to color key and apply it to your bluescrren video. Then, under atributes, there will be a color and a color selector. Click, snd then click your bluescreen. There should still be a small line arround. No problem. There should be an option for tolerance. Set it to about 20 or so. The line should disseapere, or almost completly. Thats how you do it. Just make sure nothing in your video is blue.

Okay. Now, mminimize the effect, and zoom in close around some of the blueborder. Add another color key effect, and select blue that you still see, and use the tolerance setting. Light setup and camera could also play a role in this as well.

well i tried that... and it just makes it worse.

this is the closest i could do:
    http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2203/bluedonekj3.png

i left the blue line there.... but i just changed the color of it (hue/saturation) to black.

i know its a great solution.... but when i start keying close ups and stuff... that solution might not work as well :(

and there always those little spots of blue (which are now black) that will eventually appear

Nice, could you do that on a video without the camera changing at all?

yeah all the keying effects in AE suck...

[face_laugh] The keying in AE is great. Don't rely on the software to always do the hard yards for you.

You're right. Nobody has ever done good bluescreen compositing in After Effects, so you might as well just delete the program from your computer.

    FINAL VERSION....IN GIF FORMAT
    http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/19/77611/300me3.gif

i added tons of layers..... i motion tracked the backround image so that it moves with the guy, then added smoke and wind images and made them move. then obviously i color corrected everything.

any suggestions on how to improve?

    what looks bad?
