The first concept was based on a Ralph McQuarrie concept from the Art of EPIV but this version still looked like a person with a mask. The new concept is going more toward a smaller rodent/reptilian version.

Love the pilot, he looks like the type of snivelling creep a Hutt would have around them.

There is a certain dreamy quality about your art. Lord of the Rings / Dark Crystal.

How in the world have I never posted in your thread yet, SIUEA?? I think I was still "just lurking" when I looked at your work for the first time, and was blown away by it back then! Your style is fabulous--I agree with Daankin, that it has a beautiful, graceful quality, in both the character pieces (which are outstanding designs, BTW) and the locations. I almost feel like I've seen little "animatics" of the films already, having just browsed thru the thread! Terrific work--and I'm looking forward to seeing more!

These creature/species designs are awesome, SIUEA! How in the world do you come up with them? You should be working in LucasFilm's Creature Shop, helping them create all these! I love the imagination that this must require; do you browse thru biology texts for ideas, or just sit down and let the pencil go? Fantastic work!

Oh, man--is this thing ever cool!!
I get a sense that this is a very large creature, along the lines of rhinocerous or hippo size (maybe even elephant...?)--is it a grazer, or does it eat something else (gulp...)? The detailing on the head "armoring" is wonderful--I don't imagine it has many predators, thanks to that!
Another thing I like in this piece is the mountains in the background--gives a nice "setting" to it, and a feeling of the environments that make up this animal's habitat.
You capture so much with a wonderful economy, SIUEA, and you're gifted with a wonderful and very creative imagination!

the GANJUKO concept was redesigned from an image in "The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons". eventually, i'll have all of the creatures redesigned for my future artwork and animations. i am designing original species at the same time while redesigning the original SW universe.

It's so much fun to see what you've come up with when you post!
Intriguing, this one: the "erect posture" you allude to in the first rendering reminds me of African meerkats, which rear up onto their hind legs and stand erect when alarmed...which is cute--them being small, and pretty cute-looking... In this creature, which appears to be of some size, it might be downright alarming, tho! Is that a vertical mouth opening in the front? It almost looks like an avian beak, turned on its side... Man, I would so love to see some of these "in action!" Excellent work!

This is a concept for a DROFFI from Aridus. The idea was also taken from "The Essential Guide..."-their Droffi looked like Dino from the Flintstones and didn't appear like it could be ridden like a steed. Plus, after watching the BOGA in ROTS, i wanted to make a comparable creature.
I really enjoyed working on this particular creature and plan to design more species of DROFFI.

Your creatures are very imaginative! They all look vaguely like animals a human might recognize, but they're very alien at the same time. It's very easy to imagine these living on an unexplored planet somewhere...

Question: Do you only draw made-up stuff? or do you ever do any charectors from the moves/books?

 

tyratoku, the most recent concepts are redesigns from "The Essential Guide of Planets & Moons". i am redesigning the Star Wars universe for some eventual artwork and animations. there are a few like Calamarians and ewoks here and there through this thread. i am also designing original characters/aliens for this project.

What can I say, all the creatures you draw still facinate me, and the GADO is my favorite of your more recent posts.. I guess it's rare you get to see anyone doing concepts on this sort of thing, and it's wonderful to know someone can work so well with creature anatomy and sketch up such neat pictures. Great work as usual.
