Amph Book Recommendations

im reading that right now. It's really cool. It's very different from the movie and has a bunch of small story items that make the story so much better.

 

I don't if anyone's already mentioned these, but here goes:

Supernatural Horror

Kelley Armstrong's Bitten, followed by the rest in the series.
Tanya Huff's Vicky Nelson series.
Patrica Brigg's Moon Called and Blood Bound.

Fantasy

Raymond E. Feist's Magician, followed by the rest in the series (but avoid Krondor: The Assissins, Krondor: Tear of the Gods, Murder in La Mut and Jimmy the Hand unless you find them in the library, in a half-price book store, or a charity shop and are serously bored. Those books bite)

Terry Brooks' Shannara series

James Barclay's Chronicles of the Raven Trilogy and Legends of the Raven Trilogy

Michael Stackpole's DragonCrown War Cycle, (including the Dark Glory War)

Naomi Novik's Temeraire books

Jane Welch's novels (if you can get hold of them, there's 9 in total)

Dennis Mckeirnan's Mithgar novels

R. A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms novels (be warned, trying to get hold of the whole lot can be a pain in the butt)

Sci-Fi

Simon R. Green's Deathstalker series

Timothy Zahn's Night Train to Rigel, Conqueror's Trilogy, Icarus Hunt

 

I recommend the original Dragonlance novels by Weis and Hickman. Very well written and enjoyably light reading, in my opinion.

Most of the other Dragonlance books are not as high quality as those written by WH, so I wouldn't waste a ton of time on them.

 

For those talking about Trudi Canavan earlier in the thread, her new trilogy, Age of the Five, is much better written and more adult-orientated than the Magicians Guild trilogy. So, yeah, I'd recommend them.

Fantasy

Such a broad term.

Anyway:

The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski. I got this a few days ago and it's brilliant. It's Polish, but it's still awesome. Basically it's about a Witcher who does magic stuff for money. It's cool.

Kushiel's Legacy by Jacqueline Carey. Historical fantasy, but quite a fun read, so long as you aren't seriously freaked out by sex, or masochism.

Age of the Five by Trudi Canavan. It's about a Priestess-type person who is in direct contact with gods, or some such. Fun to read.


Fantasy Horror

Couldn't think of a better genre name.

World of Watches by Sergei Lukyanenko. Made up of Night Watch, Day Watch and Twilight Watch. You may have seen the film for Night Watch, but the books are stunningly brilliant. More philosophical than the film though.



Anyway, yeah. I don't read much true-SF, so that's all the help I am

 

Forgotten Realms. They're a must-read for all thatlike fantasy.

 

I'm interested in picking up a new fantasy series that doesn't involve:
-The reluctant hero who was always destined for greatness
-The wise old mentor
-The wisecracking charming rogue
-An evil dark lord

I'm familiar with a Song of Ice and Fire but what else could I give a try?

 

Sharon Shinn's books don't usually follow that formula.

 

Malazan Book of the Fallen.

 

I'll have to look into those.

 

If you like Heroic Fantasy, I'd suggest you read any of the books by David Gemmell. The man is a literary genius.

I had forgotten that Mr. Gemell passed away.....

I was a manager at Book A Million and I took over the upkeep of the Sci-Fi/Fantasy isle. I never read any of his books but I always used to stop and read the covers of his books.

 

I have no recommendation I have a question.

That is Black Sun Rising. I hav seen this sitting on shelves for many years but I have never read it. I am curious to know what the sword does. Is it magical? Is it just something on the cover but doe not appear in the story?

The Adventures of Indiana Jones. Raiders of the Lost Ark was good and Temple of Doom was fantastic, especially the mine car chase at the end. I haven't started Last Crusade yet, but if you're an Indy fan, it's worth the $18. Highly recommended.

 

I have to second the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher and also recommend the Codex Alera series also written by Jim Butcher. I also enjoyed Scar Night by Alan Campbell.

 

it's been a while since i've read that book and its sequel. it is a magical sword, if i recall correctly. the book is definitely worth a read. second book is okay, and i have yet to read the third one.

I just bought the first book in the Kim Harrison series - "Dead Witch Walking" and I love that BBC series "Wire in the Blood" so I bought the first book in that series by Val Mcdermid.

 

Unlocked and upped.


And also, everyone needs to read Brandon Sanderson's Warbreaker. Right now.

 

Thanks to the Book Tournament going on, I'm going to look into Red Seas Under Red Skies. It sounds awesome.

I read Ilium, and its sequel, Olympos, by Dan Simmons a few months ago, and I had to re-read Olympos a few weeks back. You have to understand that I never re-read anything, especially not a book that's over 900 pages. But these books...they're astounding. Classical mythology, physical history, characters so believable its as if they live next door to you, Shakespeare, Diet Coke, and intelligent robots, coupled with hard science that would spin the nerdiest bookworm's head, and concepts so incredible that it's just mind-boggling. The 900 pages seemed like 200. Read. These. Books.

 

Be sure to read The Lies of Locke Lamora first; RSURS is the sequel. And Lies is even better, anyway.

Simmons books are basically The Battle of Troy in space right? Same characters and everything?

 

Black Sun Rising is one of my favourite books of all time and the sequels are even better. I recommend them to anyone who enjoys fantasy that deals with themes like good vs evil and the connection between science and religion. But I cannot remember the sword.
