The point is moving forward with the Trilogy, igniting the flames of the future to fight against tyranny. The New Order used kids, because they knew the Rebellion was won by the youth.

Wasn't interested in ending with the boy. In any other film, that works fine. In the middle of a SW trilogy it's weird. Especially when it's a tradition of SW films to wipe out on a scenic vista or a large scale celebration. It was another decision that made TLJ feel less like an epic and more like a TV episode.

I totally get the theme about how the actions of heroes can echo and inspire others, be it through stories of legendary Jedi standing up to an entire garrison of FO or Resistance heroes storming a local casino patronized by the corrupt. It's poignant, just doesn't work as the last scene here.

I don't think he's going to be a central character, people might be reading too much into it. I wouldn't be surprised if this trilogy ends with Rey starting up a Jedi Academy of some sort, with that boy making an appearance. I think the scene was mostly just to show that the new Rebellion had been sparked across the galaxy, with Force-sensitive people apparently getting onboard.

The kids did feel a bit like they were from a stage production of Oliver or Anne.

I think it was a nice little moment to end the movie. Nothing more nothing less.

This is an unplanned side effect of Finn going to Canto Bight. They gave hope to that boy. What this means, are we going to see this boy later on? We don't know and we better NOT make headcanons about this ! :)

This scene on the end was my personal "hope" moment for the next episode. I hope JJ continues something that covers the boys scene

It annoyed me that this was the last scene of the film. It was so meaningless and hopefully JJ forgets about him.

I'm pretty sure the temp track for that scene was "When You Wish Upon A Star."

Only I noticed that this was the only movie that did not end with a scene without dialogue?

I think that it was there to solidfiy rey being a random and anyone can do good and be part of the rebellion and have force powers.

The introductory shot of them leaning their heads out from behind the stall with the Hallmark grins on their faces will take 40+ screenings to adjust to. The Disney "When you wish upon a star" instrumental theme could be playing at that moment and not be at all out of place.

I was totally surprised and dumbfounded by the last scene, but the more I think about it the more I like it. My kids loved it right away. I think that's the point.

I had the annoying experience of sitting next to somebody who not only narrated the entire movie loudly, but also got a bunch of things completely wrong. When that kid showed up at the end, this annoying "narrator" explained to his girlfriend, "That's Luke's cousin."
    WTF?

It's jarring bcs it's so different to the way we expect a SW movie to end. Think I'm growing to appreciate it though. We may view it differently still after we see IX.

I felt more like HP. I was ready for him to put on a pair of tape up glasses and fly away in a broomstick.

And for everyone trying to read more into it then was, Ralph Parker told you what it was: “A crummy commercial!??!?” LOL! It literally was a ad for Disney World which the whole movie was about complete with decoder rings LOL! Now parents will have their kids badger them to take them there so they “too can feel like a Jedi!” LOL!!

It was meaningless commercial plug that ruin what could been a great ending. They should just had Luke stare into the two sunsets and see the Falcon racing off onto a new adventure (skip the Rey and Leia forced discussion too, we get Luke is “gone” and at best is coming back as a worthless force ghost cameo like Yoda in the next one) and is at peace with the fact his “adventure” is over with a new generation taking over. Would worked a lot better then the 30 second plug for Disney World.

    SWITS

Nothing just like JJ will have nothing for him either. These are all stand alone films with less continuity then Marvel. JJ will essentially act like TLJ never happened. He might lean on his own film more but not TLJ. You do not need to watch TLJ in order to see Episode IX. That is the whole point of this now. They are stand alone flicks. And for what it’s worth, I felt TFA worked really well as a stand alone movie but TLJ was a pretty big mess.

I loved the last scene. It proved that the spark of hope had been lit. I don't expect we'll see that kid again but that really wasn't the point.

I also think that last scene spoke so brilliantly to what it is to be a kid watching these movies. To play with your action figures and hold a broom/stick/whatever like a lightsaber and dream of things being better. I thought it totally nailed what Star Wars unlocks in all of us.

Being in the camp of "not a fan of TLJ", this scene again was just felt like a Disney add on. I almost expect this exact scene to be the commercial for the new theme park at Disneyland. I also can't take credit for that idea, as I saw it in another thread, or possibly this on.

That was pretty much my take on it. I know the majority of people in here have been buying their torches and pitchforks after the revelation (if it's to be taken seriously) that Rey IS NOT A SKYWALKER; but I think there is something to it about tying the notion that Rey is a "Random" like Christ figure (ala Anakin) who was force-sensitive at birth and dropped off on Jakku by her parents to hide her away from The First Order. Maybe there was a purge on Force-sensitive children by the First Order and they were all taken away from their families and sold off to slavery (which explains the little boy on Canto Bight). It's just a theory; but not something that hasn't been touched before in Canon material, namely TCW and Rebels.

I think the boy is a symbol, both of the downtrodden and oppressed who are nonetheless strong in the Force and who will rise, and of us, the audience, looking up into the night sky and greatness beyond.

I highly doubt that the boy will be an actual character.

Yup, and I think it's not just them either, it's a running theme in the whole movie. Luke mocks the idea that having that precious Skywalker blood means you'll definitely be good; Rose is also just someone who should be a random background character who is awed to meet a 'big shot' like she sees Finn as being, Paige is the one who saves the day rather than Poe in the battle at the start.

'Ordinary people matter and ANYONE can be a hero' is definitely one of the themes that the movie emphasises.

I thought it was a different way to end the film they all have ended with the heroes last shot in frame then end credits but some how in an odd way it worked and the message I got was hope for the galaxy and the Jedi which harkens back to A New Hope!

    @Luke02
I am guessing you don't like Harry Potter? And If you do you don't want Harry Potter homages in Star Wars?
The Star Wars OT was a mix of Western/Samurai/Knights Of The Round Table, and fantasy like Lord Of The Rings like it or not but Harry Potter books and movies have become part of our worlds great Mythology I wouldn't be surprised if Rian was a big fan of Harry Potter I am a big fan of Harry Potter especially the first three which were scored and Conducted by The great John Williams! but I loved all of them including Fantastic Beasts!

I liked it. I almost thought that Ghost Legendary Luke was going to appear in front of the kid and be like "Here are 3 lessons, kid. Pay attention" It would have added meaning in that Luke becoming a ghost in order to pass on what he has learned to a great number of people in the galaxy than he ever could hope to do as a living jedi.

I guess I think it's just setting up that the Force is awakening in people all over the GFFA again. I and hope that means that the Legend of Luke Skywalker is going to inspire them to join the Rebels or find Rey and become a new Jedi. I hope Ghost Luke is a part of that.
