Greetings from Experience Columbus(formerly the Greater Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau)!

I dont know if this is the right venue for getting this info out but found this website and wanted to let you know the details ( Im thinking you may already be aware but just in case)

If there are any conventions or events that can be built around this - I would be happy to help!

COSI Columbus will make a major media announcement on the front steps of the building Friday, July 15th at 10:00am. COSI will announce that it will be getting the brand new exhibit: STAR WARS: WHERE SCIENCE MEETS IMAGINATION.

Supported by the National Science Foundation and making its world premiere at the Museum of Science, Boston, on October 27, 2005, Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination will use all six Star Wars films as a gateway to examining technologies of today and tomorrow. COLUMBUS will be the 2nd stop on this worldwide tour. We will get the exhibit June 1st or 2nd (still being decided) and it will run through Sept. (Labor day) VERY big for our fair city.

COSI's announcement will involved 30-40 costumed STAR WARS characters. COSI President & CEO Kathy Sullivan will make the announcement and be escorted out by "Darth Vader".

Exhibit visitors will encounter artwork, props, models, film clips, and documentary footage from the Star Wars saga and investigate the numerous parallels between technologies in the films and those in the real world. They will explore amazing prototypes in progress and learn about the engineers and designers who are creating new technologies. Throughout the exhibit, visitors will notice intriguing similarities between how scientists and filmmakers think.

You can go to www.mos.org for more information.

    Regards,

    Mark Oeffler

Now this sounds like a good opportunity to get our group better known in the city. I know this is almost a year away but does anyone have any ideas of what we could do to get involved with this? Thought maybe they might be looking for volunteers and such. But I will contact him once we've had a chance to discuss ideas.

I do...don't know how many of you are interested in skipping work, but I'll gladly not sleep for a few more hours to go this friday to the opening. I knew this was happening, but the girl at Cosi only knew that it was in a few weeks, not anything besides that.

    anyone else interested?

I'll go. I'll already be at the Arena Grand, and should be getting out of the Charlie and the Choclate factory screening around that time.

As far as volunteering at Cosi, they have (or had) a volunteer program that was pretty cool. I volunteered at the old Cosi for over 200 hours, about 10 years ago. It was a great time. From my experience, there is an orientation (duh), then you just work whenever you can. No pressure from them, as in some volunteering gigs I was associated with around the same time I was at Cosi.

I'd be willing to go volunteer a day or 2 a month. Here is some info from the cosi page:

    Group Opportunities
The professional team in the Volunteer & Community Resources Office will tailor a volunteer service opportunity for just about any group. Regular ongoing positions, or one day projects can be arranged by calling 614.629.3196. <-- Something we may want to look into if we have enough people interested. If not, then see below.

http://www.cosi.org/support/volStart.htm <-- This is the site to download the application. Once you fill it out and return it:
Adults: Upon receipt of your application you will be invited to attend an upcoming Information Session. There you will hear about all the great opportunities COSI has to offer. If you like what you hear, we will hold on-the-spot interviews. If we find that we're a good match, you will advance to the training sessions with the COSI Team.

A minimum of 2 days per month is required. http://www.cosi.org/support/volunteer.htm has some more info about volunteering.

I might be mistaken, but from the info the guy gave us it seems that this Friday all they are doing is announcnig that they will be getting the exhibit as of next June:

"COSI Columbus will make a major media announcement on the front steps of the building Friday, July 15th at 10:00am. COSI will announce that it will be getting the brand new exhibit"

Doesn't meant hat our folks can't show up and represent though. :)

I'm glad you put the volunteer info out. I think it sounds like it would be a lot of fun to put some time in there. I'll drop the guy an e-mail and see what things they are planning.

I think you guys volunteering at COSI is a great idea, and a good way to get Jedi Knights of Columbus noticed in the community.

I know Ohio Garrison, and possibly Rebel Legion will be involved at some point or another. We've got a impressive contingent of BOTH groups here in Cleveland; and we'd be willing to help out from any costuming aspect.

This event is in your backyard...no reason why you guys can't be out there promoting your group.

I want to at least go. I think it would be good if we could get as many members as possible with costumes to go. Maybe we can make like a sign for our group too...with our logo and stuff.

I forget, do we have any contact info for this? We may want to get ahold of someone and volunteer through them, so that it is official...

I did e-mail the guy at the columbus visitors board who originally posted this. He said we should contact him closer to the event which I would take to be about now. I'm going to write him back today and see what he has in mind. He might be looking for volunteers or such. But I'll let you know what he says.

Hey guys...wanted to share an idea we had up here:

Since many of us are going to be in Columbus for the COSI opening (with the costuming groups)... and since JKOC have a number of people NOT going with RL or 501st...what do you guys think about making this year's "All-Ohio" event something where we can all go see the COSI exhibit together? [face_idea]

I think that sounds good...why not start with the picnic as always, then get someone to watch the site for us while we go to cosi, then head back and beat people senseless with lightsabers?! I'm game!

You really think someone is going to sit an an empty campground, and defend it with a plastic lightsaber, while everyone else is having fun at COSI?!

There is a park South West of COSI. Here is a google link
If you scroll up and to the right, you will find COSI. Maybe we could stage C 3.25 at Dodge Park?
Or possibly even Berliner park. It's huge, and plenty of open field for us to run around like idiots.

    Thoughts?

Besides, its COSI...I dunno about you guys but I didn't have that great a time when I went, but then again I never found the arcade...

But consider going with a whole bunch of SW people. [face_dancing] Good times.

We'll leave figuring out which park you want to have the cookout (like the idea of keeping it a social) at to you guys. You know the location better then any of us.

Hey all! I'm still alive!! :D

Hope to make the next meeting & wanted to flesh out a few details to see what everyone is thinking/planning about this upcoming event!
The Midnight Opening for the COSI Exhibit looks to be shaping up to be quite the SW Event of the Summer this year, with the 501st and the various other costuming groups from all over Ohio planning on attending plus Insider artist Joe Corroney & who knows who else will be there!!
I checked the COSI website & called today and it looks like tickets for the Midnight Opening on Friday June 2 are $40.00 for general admission! (COSI Members & non-members.)
I know some of you have been looking into volunteering for this exhibit, but not sure how that info. is going and if it will be available for the Midnight Grand Opening. Any updates on that?
In any case, I'll be going to the Midnight Opening and probably won't be able to volunteer so I'm just planning on paying the $40+1 'up-charge' to get in. Also, general tickets for the rest of the Summer look to be $17.50 + $1 'up-charge' per person/per visit for COSI non-members.
I?m thinking of just purchasing a 1-year COSI membership for $40.00 which will admit me to COSI for the full year, and make the SW Exhibit charge $3.00 per visit, since I?m sure I?ll be going more than once!! Anyways, just checking in to see if you guys have already or wish to discuss plans for the Midnight Opening?
Not sure how long these Midnight tickets are gonna last!!
You can purchase tickets to the Midnight Grand Opening event here:

COSI WHERE SCIENCE MEETS IMAGINATION MIDNIGHT OPENING TIX

You can click on the June 3rd date, and it will bring up a listing of all the Midnight Exhibit times.

This is a timed event, with tickets available starting at 12:30 AM at 15 minute intervals thoughout the night ?til 2:15 AM. Just click on the time you want to enter the exhibit and enter your info!

So who else is in for the Midnight Opening?
