?Grief knits two hearts in closer bonds than happiness ever can; and common sufferings are far stronger links than common joys.?
    ~ by Alphonse de Lamartine

For the first time in hours, he stopped.

He gazed around, taking in the horror. His heart constricted and his stomach turned. Breathing turned wheezy and laboured. He felt ill, seriously sick. It was everywhere; the pain, the destruction and grief, so powerful and overwhelming. How it burned.

Breathless, he leaned against a wall.

The attack had been swift and unexpected. Four huge public buildings had become terrorist targets. Technically the GA, or rather Coruscant, was under attack. It had been a mass murder of innocent people. Senseless, irreversible manslaughter.

Red blood, someone else?s blood, stained Ben?s hands and clothes.

Shaking with shock, he stared at his red fingers.

Hands he had used to pull and drag out bodies from the wreckage. Strong hands, which were painted in other peoples? agony and death. Ben clenched his hands, feeling the blood cling to his skin. It sickened him. Made him itch to scrub it away.

He?d been one of the first Jedi on the scene. Helping people, wounded and trapped in the crippled buildings, Ben had saved many lives. But not all of them, his heart reprimanded.

Screams could still be heard from the flaming, crumpling ruins. Cries of desperation. Sadly, not all the survivors could be reached. At least, not in time.

Ben could feel their deaths, their pain and fear overwhelming the Force, darkening it. It took all his control not to collapse, as the emotions were so rich and intense. His head hurt from the mere sense of despair. The emotions swarmed around him, draining him.

Slowly he cut off his connection to the Force. Closing his eyes, breathing deeply, he built a mental wall against the loud feelings. He drowned out the roar of the flames, and yells of victims. Eventually all went blank and quiet. Peace washed over him, relaxing and soothing.

A whisper in the noiselessness came, soft, but hoarse:

?Please. Go away.? Tears could be heard in the voice. ?Go. J-Just stop.?

Pulling out from his slight trance, Ben opened his eyes. He knew the voice.

He turned his head to the side, seeing what he expected. The scene was heartbreaking. He swallowed back the pain, and straightened away from the wall. For a moment he just stood there, stuck in grief and paused by indecision.

Sitting on the dirty floor, leaning against the wall, Jysella cried silently to herself.

She looked exhausted. She?d been helping the rescue teams for hours. And the horror of the attack had obviously affected her greatly.

Trails of tears dampened her pale face. Her robe was ripped, filthy and smeared with blood. But thankfully not her blood though, Ben thought mutely. Jysella was quivering with shock and sorrow.

Her mind was torn by emotions. She placed her bloody palms over her ears, wishing the desperate voices away. Their pain-filled cries, shouts, screeches, were swirling around her head, driving her mad. They wouldn?t stop. They wouldn?t go away. Instead they grew louder, more hopeless.

?Go a-away.? She murmured uselessly. ?Please go??

Ben made his way over to her. It made him ache to see her so hurt and distressed. Wordlessly, he slipped to the floor beside her. She didn?t notice. Gently, he placed his arms around her, and drew her towards his body. He simply held her.

    Unconsciously Jysella clutc

Very well written. I love how you got the darkness in so good and then that tiny bit of light between Jys and Ben. Very cute. :)

What an amazing piece! So intense in parts, but the interaction with Ben and Jys was so heartfelt and wonderful.

    Well done! =D=

star_writer24 : [face_blush] Cheers for reading. Glad ya liked it.

PHGS_Weyr : Thanks. :) It was difficult to juggle the dark, with the glimpse of light between Jys and Ben. But sometimes the pair just write themselves.

Ceillean : I?m glad ya enjoyed both the dark and light. Thank you for commenting.

    Jade_Pilot : Thanks for clicking. [face_blush]

Jade_eyes : That?s the idea, love is merely glimpsed at in this, but there's promise of it. Glad ya enjoyed it. :D Thanks for reading?
