I wanted to break down the Force plot into more of a pure fantasy / fairy tale / myth so that we could look at how its shaping up so far.

At the core of the new story is a peasant orphan girl who must fight to survive among the lowest of the downtrodden, surrounded by war relics of the last great war, and a young prince descended from both wealth and nobility but also the Gods themselves.

The Lord of Darkness is exerting his influence on the world and the God of Light has gone into exile for reasons unclear to the public.

This peasant girl experiences an awakening within her moving from child to adulthood and an increase in awareness and power that she doesn't understand and can't explain. An act of kindness starts her on her journey.

The Dark Lord senses this awakening and informs the young prince of this rising power in the world and that for him to become the Lord of darkness he was meant to be he must defeat his father and later this mysterious new force that he senses growing.

An ancient sword previously held by the mightiest of the Gods seems to call out to the girl to find it. She does and when she does some of those same ancient Gods begin to communicate with her. But why? How? Is she like them? How could that be?

She encounters the Dark prince's father, the Kings and Queens of this story, and they're remarkable. The Queen herself is a God and married for love. Kind, considerate, giving, this couple wonders how the Dark Prince become who he is and blame it entirely on the Dark Lord.

The Dark prince locates her, stalks her, and abducts her, taking her to the equivalent of his underground layer. He forces his way into her mind to unlock her secrets and discover where the Lord of Light is hiding but she resists and counters reading all of his thoughts, and learning his deepest and weakest thoughts. The two share a unique bond and an attraction that neither can understand. He tells her that he can feel it too.

She escapes and witnesses the kind King pleading with his son to return to the Kingdom and become the man he and his mother know he can be. The Dark Prince betrays and murders the King before turning his attention to the peasant girl. He spots the sword and claims it as his birthright. However, he's unable to wield it. He is unworthy of it. They fight and he tells her that she is one of the Gods, like him, and that there's so much she doesn't know that he can teach her. She resists him and injures him.

The Queen tells her that the ancient sword she has belongs to one of the most powerful Gods there is. The God of Light and also the queen's brother. He trained the Dark Prince to become the next God of Light but he instead turned toward the Lord of Darkness. This God has been in exile at the equivalent of Mount Olympus for years related to that mistake.

The peasant girl decides to seek his counsel and ask him to return to fight, bringing his ancient relic. He tells her she's making a mistake and wants to know who she is and where she came from. She tells him she's nothing but a peasant. He isn't so sure and reluctantly agrees to train her but his heart isn't in his training and she feels she's not getting the answers to the questions she seeks about herself and who she is and why she's been given these abilities. The mysterious connection between the Dark Prince and the peasant girl grows.

He is envious and angry at his former master and begins to convince the peasant girl that he is part of her destiny. It is only he who can help her reach her true potential. His former master is envious of young Gods with power like hers and will turn on her as he did him. It is only he who can help her heal her past. It is only he brave enough who will protect her from Lord of Darkness who is coming for her. Together they will defeat the Dark Lord as allies. They complete an ancient ritual of the Gods and see their shared futures. The Dark Prince sees a future where the peasant girl becomes who she was made to be and becomes his Dark Queen. The peasant girl sees a future where the Dark Prince defeats the Lord of Darkness and becomes the Prince of the Light he was supposed to be, ending the war and delivering peace.

The peasant girl leaves the equivalent of Mount Olympus not only with more knowledge than she had before but also ancient texts on the history of the Gods themselves and their powers.

She returns to the Dark Prince's layer and goes to confront the Lord of Darkness by herself. The Lord of Darkness overwhelms her with his magic and presents her for execution by the young prince. The Prince turns on his master and kills him and his demon guards attack them both. They work together beautifully as a couple.

For a moment the peasant girl is elated, sensing victory and that the vision she experienced was correct. For a moment the Prince is elated, too, believing that he's finally found a soul mate worthy of him and his line that he can share the riches of his power with. He believes he's found the queen of darkness to rule with. He approaches the throne and asks her to be his Queen. Telling her that nobody can offer her a peasant girl like her more than he is offering.

The peasant girl realizes her mistake, and that her vision was wrong, and rejects his offer. She doesn't want to be his Queen and now realizes he has become the new Lord of Darkness. They turn on each other for the sword but this time the new Lord of Darkness has increased his power and can wield the sword just as well as she could. She escapes with the sword shattered.

The God of Light appears before the new Lord of Darkness with a showing of magic that no one has ever seen before, deceiving the Lord of Darkness into mistake and helping the peasant girl's friends and allies to escape the Lord of Darkness' wrath. He also helps the peasant girl to realize that it is time for a new Lord of the Light. A new beacon of hope for the oppressed. A new guardian of peace. Her. She is the new Lord of the Light.

The public haven't seen the Lord of the Light in years and had lost faith and his return, and the announcement of a new Lord of the Light brings them hope and joy, inspiring a public uprising to defeat the new Dark Lord and his legion and that final chapter is up next.

I feel like when you zoom out on it like this and change the names you can see the spine of the fairy tale better.

Since the movies have been spread out over 2 years and because there's also so many other interesting things happening involving the people with less God-like power it's easy to lose sight of the the fantasy quest at the heart of the war that's impacted by the Light and Dark.

I was trying to connect the dots to anything else infamous but could only do so around surface level aspects. Hades and Persephone being sort of Kylo Ren’s goal (on a certain level). Does the above make anyone else think of any other old stories?

Well done on it all. This particular piece interests me. Wonder what we're going to get next with this sword, Kylo and Rey? Between the sword and the vision in TFA, this small piece of the story may be what can bind TFA, TLJ, and Episode IX in some way we weren't expecting?

I have a feeling Rey will learn more about saber creation in the ancient Jedi texts and she will reforge the original “sword pieces” into something for her. Like a dual-sided staff.

Good write up. When you strip out the Force storyline only, it becomes more interesting. For me, it's a shame it's taking place against the backdrop of another Empires v Rebels re-telling.

It's a story of good vs evil, there's no movie without it.

Does it always have to be Rebels v Empire though?

The uniforms will change over time, and even the species wearing them probably will over time, but on a certain level the wars in Star Wars will generally be fought between an aggressor with fascist and totalitarian goals who believes in total control over everything and less opportunity for those at the bottom, and no platform to complain about corruption and cronyism, and a group that opposes that and wants the power and the decision making to remain democratic, and for there to be oversight in key decisions, and who believe in civil liberty and freedom, and want to fight for a world where there's more opportunity for beings regardless of their species, gender, or economic status at birth.

When you boil down the differences between most wars on some level that's what the divides come down to. There could be a little more religious motivation thrown into some wars, or a little more need/greed around resources in other wars, but boiled down to the basic level... that's typically why one side is seeking to exert control, or establish a brand new dictatorial government, and the other is seeking to stop that. And generally the biggest threats to the aggressor's ultimate goal is targeted first.

You can make them all seem the same: Rebel v Empire, Resistance v First Order, North v South, Allied v Axis, Eagles v Cowboys, its all the same

The biggest difference in this saga definitely revolves around the Force fantasy element. They have deliberately decided that the father and son aspect in the OT was perfect and to leave it alone and are branching off into a new fantasy involving male and female participants and a different dynamic that isn't about them being related.
