We know that the Death Star plans were on some sort of physical media, as Leia transferred the plans to R2 without hooking him up to the main computer.

But what happened to the data tapes? Why didn't Leia transfer the data to R2, and then keep the tapes to stop the Imperials from looking for them? (Why look for something you've already found, to put it another way).

Leia didn't really download the plans into Artoo; she just put the plans into him.

Maybe a download would have taken too long, she didn't exactly have a lot of time to spare and plans for a moon sized battle station are probably quite large.

No no, Data was actually a band that Vader was in when he was younger, and a few bootleg demo tapes got out of the Empire's hands and Leia had them. Luke listens to them on Tatooine.
