Can someone tell me about this promo photo of Luke w/ Lightsaber?

note to mods: I'm still a newbie, and I just now realized that I previously posted this in the wrong section. I can't find an edit or delete button for my old post and I didn't want to bump it just to say "sorry, wrong forum".

As far as I know, there are only 2 photos in this set: the above and one where the blade is horizontal across his chest.

These are my questions:

1) Were these taken for the original Star Wars? I thought it's weird that I've never seen them before until about 2-3 years ago.

2) Why do some versions of the pic have a starwars.com logo?

3) Are there more than 2 photos in this set?

 

I don't really know, but the shape of Mark's face looks more like his post-accident face i.e. ESB/ROTJ period.

 

I believe they are from the time of ANH. They did promotional pictures with all the characters - ie those same familiar pictures of Han and Leia that you always see. There should be a few more of Luke in his various costumes. If some images have sw.com on them then it may be because they were used on the site at some point. Here are some more of Luke, although some aren't the proper versions.

And if you look at the recent DVD cover for ANH you can see that some of those classic character shots of Luke, Han and Leia are still being used:

Thanks for the rundown! I knew I recognized the blue backdrop from some of the other promo photos (I think it's the same one as the blaster w/ 2 enemy bolts pic), but I was still amazed to have seen the lightsaber ones for the first time only 2 years ago.

I just liked this particular promo because of the minimalism. There's a lot of flair, but essentially it's a generic guy in white pajamas with a lightsaber.

 

Those bottom two pictures are SO 70s--it looks like Mark Hamill is channeling Farrah Fawcett.

 

I'm not sure exactly when they shot the Episode IV promo photos, but if the pictures were taken after shooting was mostly over, it's quite possible Mark had already had his car accident by then. The wreck happened in early 1977, just before he was scheduled to film a short pick-up scene for ANH (a shot for a landspeeder travel sequence, IIRC). They ended up having to use a body double since Mark was indisposed.
