The ALP lost because
a) Liberal is doing some things right - and before I cop stuff for saying that, I am an ex-member of the ALP and was formerly a Democrat so I think you'll see that I'm not exactly a conservative... But in all fairness, our economy grows whilst the rest of the world stalls.
b) Beasley, as leader of the ALP, was not in opposition to much. An opposition leader should be a vocal opponent, though unlike our [NSW] opposition leader, they should actually have a basis for said arguement.

However, Howard's time has come. By his own admission he hold Sir Robert Gordon Menzies in high personal esteem, which I take to imply that Howard is still daydreaming of 1956.

But, as the late, but oh-so-great Bill Hicks said:
