Cancelling D-Con

This morning, Warren Holland announced that the SW:CCG world championships would be canceled for this year in light of the events of 9/11, and the money that would have gone to the winner is instead being donated to charity.

Does anyone else think this is incredibly stupid? This is the time when Decipher needs to be as loyal to its customers as possible, what with all the rumors of the license being revoked and all. Canceling D-Con is the worst thing they could do.

I didn't plan to go myself, but there are a lot of other angry SW:CCG players out there who have spent the last year prepping themselves for this big event.

Thoughts?

 

I think it was a good move. A good portion of the U.S. Navy is parked in their backyard and I believe safety is a legit concern there.

As for the licence: they have it till April of next year. You'll notice it conveniently ends just before Ep2 releases. Decipher is not the only licence that is on an "Episode-to-Episode" basis with LFL.

1. I think the decision to give money to charity is a wonderful and generous one. I hope the money will help people.

2. I think cancelling DecipherCon was a terrible decision. It will hurt the game and it will hurt the company.

*whistles* man o man this sucks. You would think that the damage already would have been enough. Already we are losing millions of dollars in airline business, fuel for the escorting jets, and various delays in sports games and other activities. Cacelling D-Con is just adding to everyones anger. I mean this is a world event being cancelled because of a bunch of suicidal terrorists. I wonder what we have to give up next because of this.

This was a great move and should be applauded. Cheers to you Decipher for seeing the importance of unity and safety amongst our people. Every little bit counts.

 

How could it be a good idea if they are alienating all of their customers? This was a poor move on Decipher's part.

Yes, the charities need all the help they can get, but not at the expense of others who depend on the company.

 

If Decipher loses its lisence (Sp?) then who will pick it up? Will Wizards of the Coast get it too? That would be intresting to see, as long as we dont get pokemon style SW CCG. Who ever gets it needs to pretty much continue in the same light as Decipher, a few changes could help, even if they don't do it theres always house rules.

 

They would most likely create a whole new game for Episode II, correct?

 

Bib, let's not jump overboard and claim that this decision will "alienate" all of Decipher's customers.

It doesn't alienate me, because I had never intended to go to D-Con. Only a minority of Decipher's customers ever go to D-Con. (If D-Con represents the MAJORITY of Decipher's customers, man oh man they must be hanging on by a thread!)

It also doesn't alienate me because I was against the decision to award $10,000 prizes in the first place. Money like that turns a nice friendly little game into something too competitive and cutthroat. Now you have (some) players who are only in it for the money. That's sad.

But I do sympathize with those players who WERE in it for the money. If I were in their shoes, I would be disappointed, too.

Is it a bad move for Decipher? Who knows. How many people who had been planning to go to DecipherCon cancelled their plans after Sept. 11? I don't know, and neither do you. For all we know, the potential World Champion player had already decided not to attend DCon, afraid to get on a plane. Sept. 11 had already weakened DecipherCon, let's not forget that when we pass judgement on Holland's decision.

Could Holland have made a different decision? Sure, I think so. I think he could have postponed DecipherCon to a later date. Or run a "virtual" DecipherCon. Or cancel it for all except those who had qualified for Day 2. Or cancel DCon, but guarantee players who qualified for Day 2 this year that they automatically qualify for Day 2 next year -- with the same prize money up for grabs. Would any of those have been better? Who knows. I get the impression from Holland's message he doesn't want to risk finding out in HINDSIGHT that keeping DCon was a bad idea.

Yes, Decipher has alienated several players with this. But they have pleased several players, too. Those players get drowned out, if they speak up at all ... but they are out there.

The majority of Decipher's "customers", though, are like me: completely and totally ambivalent.

 

Well I was one of the many players planning to goto D-con this year and learn that it's canceled, First Iw as in shock then after reading Warren's article it was perfectly understandable to me. I would rather have everyone safe than have to worry that the US Navy would get bombed to hell and back. Plus the fact that they are donating the money to charity(ies) is great. All I have to say is to everyone complaining about not getting the chance to goto worlds is this "Big Deal!" So what we can't get to the yearly event this year. Remember folks this is only a GAME. Life is more important than a game.

 

Yeah, I think I have to go with D on this one. 100%? No, but more than 50-50. I think that it should have been pushed back personally, but I'd rather not see it at all than to risk anything that could end up hurting people. As to how it might hurt them, I don't know, but then again when I woke up on 9-11 I didn't think that anything would have happened then either. At the least I think it's a good decision if only to respect the lives of those who were killed or who know those who died. For all things there is a season and right now games don't seem quite as important.

I think cancilling it was a good idea. I fyou want to play, go play in a regional or something. Remember theres always next year! It's just a game.

It looks to me like players are voting with their feet for these games, and they're going to Norfolk!

Yes, decktech is indeed planning something for Wars down there. However, many of the SMs (along with the YJ Jedi Council members and Trek Ambassadors) are planning regional events. I do know that there are two seperate groups planning events in the Northeast for December/January.

 

It's good to know that DCON 2K2 is still going, though.
