The original Bavarian Purity Law celebrates its 500th anniversary tomorrow. We can agree that there have been a few missteps in the last 500 years of German history, but the Purity Law isn't one of them. As an example for other countries to follow, the Purity Law has served as a shining beacon of hope, a symbol of how purity leads to cultural dominance. Raise your glasses and join me in toasting Germany and its five century commitment to purity.

    http://reinheitsgebot.de/startseite/reinheitsgebot/

It's the Magna ******* Carta of fermented grain.

Is this something 2 b proud of? The GPL was made to prevent brewers using wheat so the wheat can be used for food.

    That's it.

The added bonus of this thread, Rylo Ken, is that you can recycle it for my birthday next year with only a minor change to the title.

As with tobacco and Coca-Cola, beer has had its moments when producers experimented with making it even more addictive, as if anything ever needs to be more addictive than alcohol.

also, don't know if you noticed this. It's subtle. Those Germans and their limitless capacity for poetry.

So if I'm reading this correctly, if the world went by this law, there would be no wonderful craft beers?

If that's the case, I would have to say **** that ****!

Did a little research on this. Thanks 2 the Purity Law. North German Spice Beer & Cheery Beer went extinct. If some one wants 2 make a "craft beer" in Germany it cant b called beer.

This law created more problems then solved.

    that's because it's not beer.

There's the old classic joke, probably first told in Germany:

Q: why is American beer like making love in a canoe?
    A: It's ******* close to water.

They don't get to decide. Only the Reinheitsgebot gets to decide.

If it were only a suggestion, it would be called the Reinheitsvorschlag or maybe the Reinheitsvorliebe (not sure that one works).

    But it's the ReinheitsGEBOT.

    And Gebot means "Commandment" dammit!

    A few more things

1 It's really the Bavarian Purity Law, as it was passed in the Kingdom of Bavaria first, other German kingdoms followed suit afterward.

    2. Craft beer in and of itself is not banned by any means - craft beer is simply need in smaller amounts rather than mass produced.

And the law has been flouted for years in its place of origin - Weißbier, nectar of the gods for most Bavarian, is made with wheat, not barley.
