That's what the landline is for. Then again, they still can't count on me for help.

I do have a cell phone derp story for your reading amusement:

Last January we got about an inch of snow, which in North Carolina outside the mountains means "OMG WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!", the French Toast Apocalypse plus all government agencies shutting down including schools. A friend of mine had offered to pick up my kids if I couldn't get away from work in time, but I did, then a text came through from her, asking if I needed her to pick them up. The time stamp on the text was 30 minutes before I read it and why the hell didn't I get an alert? I happened to be near the Sprint store so I went in and asked, and...

    My silencer was on.

I think I made the Sprint technician's day.

My cell phone is always on silent/vibrate because ringtones are obnoxious at the workplace. Besides, I always have it with me so I know when someone calls or texts me. If I go somewhere noisy then I'll turn the ringtone on but that's about it.

90-99% of when I have my phone on, which doesn't mean it's on as often as my brother has his on. I always shut it off when I go to sleep, and sometimes won't put it back on until a bit of time has passed when I wake up.

You would ask me to share such things with one who treats his machines like living flesh?

it's better than to treat living flesh/blood animals like machines.

I don't see how asking whether something is used or not is treating it "like a machine."

More to the point, unless Ender changes his ways, I could never begin to contemplate granting your request.

A baby human is not a beast. It is one of many distinctions we make between the two.

Lives have purposes. The complexity of a life form corresponds to the intricacy of its tasks. Where simple enough to be discerned and articulated, it is not incorrect to investigate a creature's ability to execute. It is the way of flesh.

Isn't it proper to recycle old cell phones when you're done with them? Oh, wait, something else is being discussed now. Never mind. :p

I am at the moment unaware of the waters of Wocky's homeworld. This is sad.

I've noticed that too many members of my social circle (my father is especially guilt of this) will leave a voicemail for the most mundane of messages, mostly "Call me back!". The missed call notification is more than sufficient for that sort of thing.

Sent from my iPhone 5... take that, Wocky!

I know quite a few people 40's and up that don't have landlines, my parents, who are in their 60's included.I think it's becoming more and more common that people are dropping the landline, not just younger people.
But I agree, if you don't have a landline, you should keep your cell on for emergencies. I do and the only time I've had a problem with people disturbing me was when I worked night shift and slept during the day.

If you drink a bottle of whiskey 9 nights out of 10, I don't think you're in any position to consider someone crazy if they drink a bottle of whisky every night. :p

Secondly, why turn it off at night if youre only going to have to turn it back on the next morning? Phones are also used as alarm clocks, not to mention nighttime is the perfect time to recharge the battery. Turning it off in the evening seems fairly pointless.

The alarm clock function works even if the phone is off.
