So, remember how the entire marketing campaign for TFA was bashing the prequels, bashing Lucas, bashing CGI, and promoting crappy "practical" effects? Well, guess what? Abrams is a MASSIVE liar (as expected). Not even the forest during the lightsaber fight is real! It's all just two actors on a blue & green screen.

Video: Star Wars VFX, before and after

Essentially, TFA is in fact a CGI-fest, with a couple bad puppets and costumes to ensure you get pulled out of the experience.

    No kidding.

PT bashing aside, there wasn't any PT bashing in the promotion for this film.

JJ used cgi for some characters, ships, and enhancements. He never said he wouldn't use cgi. He also used cgi to hide puppeteers and support structures supporting practical elements, which I think is great.

Yes it is, and now you are digging deeper. ENTIRE campaign? Utterly ridiculous nonsense. Do you want me to post a link to every trailer that doesn't mention practical effects? The posters? The interviews? You wanna say that practical effects were an element of the early campaign? I'd agree. To say it was the entirety of the campaign is a bald-faced lie. Hang your head in shame.

To much paranoia when it comes to SW and CGi.
It's the quality of the CGi that mathers.

"We're gonna use practical effects and real sets and real locations, unlike the PT which was all CGI" (even though that is an utter lie)
"We're gonna film in outdated 35mm film rather than digitally like the PT"
"LOOK LOOK we've filled the trailers with OT imagery, this film is not like the PT!"
"We're only treating the OT as canon, we're ignoring the PT"
"We don't respect anyone who likes the PT"

    That was the marketing campaign.

Um, what? What campaign were you following? o_O

Not true at all. It's just that a small subset of fans decided to come up with their own preconceived fantasies based on what the filmmakers revealed about using more practical effects and blew the whole thing WAY out of proportion. Anyone who didn't believe that there would be CGI in this film was kidding themselves.

it's all besides the Point, it all looks alot more real than the PT (and OT really for that matter) good combination of Real Sets / Props and Good CGI (CGI is going to be better obviously) PT was too heavy on the CGI especially as CGI wasn't anywhere nearly as realistic looking as it does now.

They never said the PT didn't do that.

35mm film is not outdated, and Abrams always shoots on film.

It is a sequel to the OT, so more OT imagery than PT is natural. It does look like its own thing though, neither PT nor OT.

    They never said that.

That was Simon Pegg, who was speaking for himself. You know that text that comes up on DVD's: "the opinions expressed in interviews and/or commentary tracks are those of the individual, and do not necessarily represent _____"? Yeah.

    yeah....ok
No it doesn't. Especially not the awful puppets and terrible fake-looking non-Star Wars aliens
So just like the PT then?
No it wasn't. And it looks like it had less than TFA

I think you need to go back and re-watch PT pal, TFA looks so much better. Which it should do, technology has advanced, it should always be getting better.

I think you should take off those rose-tinted glasses ^_^

This sort of thing was old the day after SDCC. So, no, I don't share the OP's thoughts.

JJ never said they wouldn't use CGI. Strawman down.

They strongly implied it. Acting like doing it was a return to the old old style, as opposed to how it was in 1999-2005.

Yes it is. And it was deliberately done to insult Lucas for being the first person to film a blockbuster digitally.

No, it looked like a copy. Actually it even looked like just a copy of ANH, ignoring the technological advances of ESB and ROTJ. The movie itself was a derivative copy.

    Abrams said it.

Pegg was heavily involved in the marketing. Abrams and co used him as their mouthpiece to avoid that very message.
