Agreed. You get used to the weird names. Jango, Dooku, Grievous, Padme, Chewbacca, Boba, Mothma, Phasma etc

 

Exactly. Even "Yoda," which is now so broadly accepted without question, sounded pretty silly when it was first heard, and I remember a ton of jokes being made about it (usually relating it to Yodels, those chocolate, cream-filled desserts.)

 

Obi-wan is also a very silly name.

 

Walrusman is the silliest of names.

 

Yeah, I don't see how any of these names aren't like every other Star Wars name. Once we see and hear them in the context of the finished film, they'll fit like all the others do.

 

Captain Needa is weird too. But I liked the hapless guy, so I'm good with the name.

 

Phasma is a perfect Star Wars name. What else would you use? Captain Smith?

 

Star Wars names are supposed to be weird.

 

Poe, Rey, Finn, Han Solo, 3PO....

When you know the names to sing, you can sing most anything.

May have been said, but I'm delighted that one of the leads has a 'real world' name. It seems like a little thing, but I always felt like those familiar sounding names (Luke, Ben, Owen etc) peppered among the weirder names, gave a certain charm and innocence to the Star Wars universe. It's hard not to scoff at madey-up, dorky sci fi names before you become familiar enough with the characters that it becomes normal sounding. You can immediately get on board with a guy called Luke. You can immediately get on board with a guy called Finn.

 

We'd be having these same conversations with the names in the OT.

for example: (without any context)

• Jabba
• Yoda
• Mon Mothma
• Ackbar

Don't forget that in the novel 'Han Solo at Stars' End' (US edition) there is a character called 'Bollux'.

Absolutely hilarious to us Brits, to the extent that they changed it to 'Zollux' for the UK edition.

 

Looks like someone's gearing up to watch their favorite live-action drama, "Commander Hoek and Cadet Stimpy!"

Captain Phasma....seriously?

It's weird, but who am I to complain? When the movie's over I'm not going to care what their names are. I'm just going to be rooting for the heroes, crying over the ones that died, and wishing the next one would come out already.

 

Seriously, it's just names. there's nothing about these names makes them less or more silly than what has been Star Wars names before. If the rest of the movie is good, the names won't matter. That's just it. Also, I think they are neither decoys nor shortened. Though I think Rey at least actually has a last name. Whatever it may be.

 

I wonder if Captain Phasma could actually be the leader of the swashbuckling pirates?

 

Or he's a celebrity.

 

Maybe it's Domhnall Gleeson' character? the one with the pimp coat & black storm trooper helmet?..

 

Has anyone suggested Captain Phasma Solo yet?
