    FYI gang...

As some of you may know there is a census coming around on May 15, 2001
(Canada). For those who don't know, a census is where the government
compiles general information about its residents (number of people living
    in your house, religion, etc).

If there are enough people, who put down a religion that isn't mentioned on
the census form it becomes a fully recognised and legal religion. It
usually takes about 10,000 people to nominate the same religion. It is for
this reason that it has been suggested that anyone who does not have a
dominant religion to put "Jedi" as their religion.

Send this on to all your friends and tell them to put down "Jedi" on their
census form. And remember ......If you are a member of the Jedi religion
then you are by default a 'Jedi Knight'. So if this has been your dream
since you were 4 years old, do it because you love Star Wars... If not,
then just do it to annoy people!

"May the Force be with you!"

    Mike -
I came across this one a few weeks ago in the Australia forums. It seemed a little odd to me so I did a few google searches and did a fair bit of digging. Of the many articles I found, this one sums it up best:
    http://entertainment.iafrica.com/news/259622.htm

Seems that this one is an urban email legend. File it alongside the $250 cookie recipie from Neiman Marcus, Bill Gates donating a $1 to a sick child for every person you forward the email to and Internet Cleaning Day.

I wasn't able to get a hold of info on fines for providing false info on the Canadian census, but I do know that they are there.

To be recognized as a religion in Canada you must deal with the office of the registrar general in Ontario. Bare basics, they want the following info:
    * How clergy are appointed and dismissed.
    * A copy of the marriage ceremony.
    * A copy of the group's form of worship "namely actions or practices of displaying reverence or veneration paid to a being or power regarded as supernatural or divine displayed by appropriate acts, rites and ceremonies."
    * A letter stating who in the group will keep track of clergy registrations.
    * A copy of the group's incorporation papers.
    * A copy of the group's registration as a charity by Canada Customs and Revenue Agency.
    * A description of the organizational structure of the group.
    * Signatures of at least 25 group members, not including clergy and their families

But even with all that, it's not so simple. There's more info to be found here: http://www.religioustolerance.org/can_gov_reg.htm

    ---

What I find interesting however, is the speed at which this has not only circulated the globe - but the extreme enthusiasm with which it's adopted.

What Tragic says is basically true :( In Australia (It actually originated in NZ) they are now fining anybody who puts down 'Jedi' $1000 for wilful perjury on a government publication. (Luckily, the Australian dollar is the one dollar still a few cents *below* Canada's :D ). Freedom of religion aside, Canada does not allow religions to just crop up as Tragic points out, you must submit documentation of it. (Church of the Universe, the one taht worshipped Marijuana was situated about 2km from my house a while ago!). Sorry guys, but unless you're willing to go to court to argue your freedom of religion (Which I'm debating, but doubt I'll ever do), don't bother.

Although it'd be a nice something to rub in the faces of Trekkies [face_devil] So what if you got a shuttle named Enterprise, we got a state religion :p

I filled out the census form and I don't remember a question of religion even being on there.

I tend to fill in forms carefully as they do tend to affect where funds are going is immensely important for me. The percentage of people that say their maternal language (that they still speak) is French will determine the percentage of funds will be distributed to francophone schools, for services in French, etc. Anybody that enter "Other" or "English" will see funding going to anglophone schools, etc. At one point, our schools had to inform students to tell their parents that it is important they answer "French" if they want the schools to get their funding.

Anyway, I'm going a little too far into this topic. :p Just try and be responsible with something like this. ;)

    Hi all,

There is a question on religion. It's Question #22. And it reads as follows:
    What is the person's religion?
Indicate a specific denomination or religion even if this person is not currently a practicing member of that group.
For example, Roman Catholic, Ukrainian Catholic, United Church, Anglican, Lutheran, Baptist, Greek Orthodox, Jewish, Jedi (just kidding), Islam, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, etc.

I just got it today and the guy that dropped it off said if any of it wasn't done properly he would be back for the correction. Scary guy too.

PS ....Mike how do you want to talk to me? Our chat room at Y.J.N., or MSN, or...?

Wow, This has generated alot of talk. I actually received first word of this from
my boss. Even though I am a Catholic/
Anglican, if there is a box on the Census,
I will check it off as Jedi. I think that
my wife will too. Just for the heck of it !!!

Hi Chris, I am still trying to figure that one out too as my job is pretty intense and
I do not have alot of time to read the message boards, but I am going to do my best
to monitor all the activity especially as we are almost a year away from EPII. I may even
line up with you guys. ( I am going to take some heat for saying that !!! )

Mike I would jump at the idea accept for two problems...

    1) I am an avid Pentacostal Christian
    2) My mom was too eager to please the census people and filled out the form already...

Actually I did not even see a question for
religon on my census form. My wife was not
too keen with the "jedi" idea anyways.

Jedi as a religion = good
being fined for putting it on your form = bad

Actually I looked through the census form I got, I had a question about religion on it.

At least I hope so, or else I really got a weird answer for one of the questions.
