ST Chewbacca / Peter Mayhew in Ep. VII

Star Wars UK tweet now gone - either this wasn't the real deal, or JJ & co. were upset to have our first glimpse at a character in the film come through a selfie with the Disney CEO on Instagram.

 

It's of course cool to see Chewie again, but to be honest I really didn't expect them to alter his look in any significant way. Doubt anyone would be upset over this image getting out.

I expected Chewie to have some male pattern baldness by now. So I'm really disappointed too.

 

Chewie must really love that bandolier. That must be like, his lucky bandolier.

 

I also expect Chewie to have a drinking problem and major debt.

Chewie looks like a rich white guy! My childhood is ruined.

 

Looks like the right hand (Lucasfilm) doesn't know what the left hand (Disney) is doing and not for the first time in recent months.

 

30 years have passed, and Chewie has now learned how to speak basic English. He will be voiced by Andy Serkis.

 

For a brief moment after reading this, I actually became afraid that something like this could happen. Thank goodness I came to my senses.

When you compare that Chewie to Ep 3 and Empire:

Looks like they really nailed the look of OT Chewie specifically from Empire, it seems like that was their template. I notice Peter doesn't seem to be wearing eye makeup? So it may be just a test fitting.

 

Thanks for directing me there, I just looked at that today and it was hilarious!

 

I think the costume looks tremendous...they captured his original look perfectly! No grey hair needed as a means to overemphasize his age or to show that 30 years had passed.

I know the now-defunct EU said that wookiees live for hundreds of years, but even so, I think the suit would look really cool with some grey hairs.

Well, the special was long since out of continuity. The notion of his family and of Life Day itself, though, remained. The novels and comics where they appeared is out, but it is unclear if they will make the transition to the new EU or not.

 

He kinda already had some grey hair even in the original trilogy. I recently watched them again and he clearly isn't all brown.
How old is he supposed to be anyway? I know Yoda was 900 but what about Chewie?

 

Kinda surprised Mayhew was in good enough health to participate. Didn't he just have knee surgery?
Poor guy is probably pretty wore out by now. Good to see he can still do this!

 

200 years old according to the SNES game I used to play in the 90s. That's probably more reliable than EU by now right?
