Nice to see someone's on my side with this whole "Evil Dead" bid-ness. I'm not trying to be an elitest film freak (tho let's face it, I am one.) It's just that the series is such a cornerstone of modern film. Rami was one of the first directors to dare to add quirky characters and moments of offbeat humor in between scenes of unspeakable violence/horror. Before he got the "...Rings" job, Peter Jackson was best identified as the Kiwi version of Sam Rami ("Evil Dead II" and "The Feebles" make a great double-feature) and Bill Paxton calls Rami "the director James Cameron is constanly trying to be." No faint praise from Cameron's muse.

Anyway, Peaches earned his Rancor, even if he never technically "karaoke'd."

Thom's death will be swift and painful, and probably won't happen on the same night I drink a third of a bottle of Kurant.

    -Le Penguin,
who's totally up for hosting an Evil Dead viewing party, as long as it happens at someone else's place and I don't have to be there

I've seen the Evil Dead series..clean the taters out of your ears when I'm talking to you.
Only it's kind of disturbing to me...as my mother was "attacked" by a tree in front of me when I was 5.

Woo-hoo! "Evil Dead" Party! Count me in. I've got the Bruce Campbell 'Bootleg' version of "Army of Darkness", and my Necronomicon-packed "Evil Dead" is waiting on my Amazon.com Wish List. Classic.

I was shocked to find my co-workers had never seen "Fast Times At Ridgemont High". I mean, how do you get through high school without seeing that? Incoming freshman should be made to watch that and Ferris Beuhler on Day 1.

My other vote for a movie you have to watch to gain CF-hood: Spaceballs

I think "Fast Times..." can be supplanted with "American Pie" for anyone under 25. "Ferris Beuller" tho, has a certain timelessness. I'm not sure there's a 21st century equivallent (yet.)

I agree that all geeks should see "Spaceballs," but only for the Star Wars connection. Except for a few good lines here and there and two (out of three) really good closing scenes, it's a pretty bad movie.

My partial list of "movies every geek should see:"

    Star Wars OT
    LOTR series
    Alien & Aliens
    Psycho
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    Bride of Frankenstein
    Fight Club
Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness
    Jaws
Night of the Living Dead and (the original) Dawn of the Dead
    Dr. Strangelove
    A Clockwork Orange
    Godzilla
    Airplane!
    Star Trek's II & VIII
    Clerks & Chasing Amy
    Young Frankenstein
    Metropolis
    2001
    The Matrix
    Robocop
    The Manchurian Candidate

While there are several (dozens?) more, these are the films that lay a pretty solid gorundwork for the others (plus, they're all damn fine films; I left out the required-but-inferior flicks like Spaceballs and Breakfast Club)

wasn't this a karaoke thread yesterday? Damn this ADD...

karaoke was unrealmadfun. and i'm not just saying that cause i left with free star wars toys!

my favorite performance was probably lepenguin's falsetto rendition of "material girl," though his "my way" was also cool. and i'm not just saying that cause he gave me the free toys!

actually, everyone was damn good. it ended up being a very cool bar...i was a little nervous when we first got there and it was empty. but then, getting there early let us get a few awesome tables.

let's do this again. great event. mad fun.

Once upon a time, I could do a great mid-80s Madonna/Belinda Carlisle voice. Now it's less "Madonna" and more "screeching ringtailed lemur."

"Metropolis" actually had the most upbeat ending for any German film ever until Tykwer made "Run Lola Run."

Peaches did not sing. Neither did I; my voice had been worn down to raspy ickiness by the time I finally picked a song and my turn at the mike came around.

So those of you who've always wanted to hear me sing... keep on waiting. *chuckle*

(I do take solace in the fact that, by that point in the evening, very few people were actually singing well. Still, as I mentioned to Matt, I used to be vocally-trained, and it goes against the grain to sound like bantha pudu up there.)

Oh, and Penguin's not gonna kill me. He's going to do far worse than kill me. He'll hurt me, and he'll go on... hurting me....

i'm very disappointed in myself and the rest of you goons.

bosh just quoted freakin' QUEEN's "bicycle race" and no one mocked him!

    nice quote, lady!

    (that song is great, though.)

That's cuz Queen sucked. They weren't horrible or fundamentally undeserving of fans (like The Guess Who or the recent wave of "boy bands"). I just don't like their muic.

    Plus, Dave's an idiot.

I finally got a chance to take a look at these (thanks, Haz):

I'm quietly proud of Dave and my rousing rendition of The Jeffersons Theme:

but this one's gotta be my favorite:

I wanna know what's up with Slackzmatt and his lack of clever captions for these wondervah pictures.

JJ, show up for an event one year and then you can comment on the handsome Ben Stiller types.
