Interesting. With those traces of HIV DNA and RNA in the child's bloodstream....could this be the first step towards a vaccine as well?

I was thinking along those same lines too. Re-watched that ep on Saturday and thought I was imagining things when I saw this story on Sunday.

Were I the CEO of a drug company who made one (or more) of these antiretroviral drugs, I would be donating them by the truckload to any lab or hospital which was looking to conduct further research along these lines. There are times where profit needs to be set aside for the greater good and this would be one of those times.

I don't know, Kyle. If you were the CEO of a large drug company, you probably would've lost your soul many years ago.

also CEOs cant just do whatever they want. they have a legal obligation to the shareholders that keeps them from doing the right thing on pain of legal action against them. what you've described could land a CEO in jail for defrauding shareholders

    Ten's right.

I'm no hippie, but I found that principle one of the most upsetting things I'd ever learned about corporate law. I get it: you have a fiduciary duty to people who spent their own money investing in your thing, but... ugh. Dislike.

I saw this story earlier this morning and it put a smile on my face. It's no guarantee that a genuine cure for the disease for all the sufferers of it will come out of this, but it's another step toward that and that makes me happy.

This is when you label it as a "charitable donation", mainly for the tax writeoffs (which these things can generate, trust me) but also the positive PR which is never a bad thing, especially for a drug company. I've been around these types for years, I know all too well what they can/cannot do and I also know how they operate, this wouldn't be off the table at all.

Technically it's been around for more than 32 years, but Rock Hudson marked the beginning of everyone knowing about it.

Yes, but that doesn't stop shareholder derivative suits. You'd still have to defend that sort of action in court, and I think that (sadly) letting go of an HIV cure for PR or tax writeoffs in lieu of the profits is so extreme that it wouldn't be protected by the business judgment rule.

you could just, go ahead and do it, paul farmer-style, (rockstar harvard medical anthropologist famous for, among other things, the time he straight up stole a bunch of anti-retrovirals from harvard research labs and just took em in a suitcase to haiti and started passing em out), consequences be damned, but the kind of people who would do that simply aren't the kind of people who become CEOs of for-profit companies. our system places sociopaths and near-sociopaths in that role, not extreme altruists

Were I the CEO of a drug company, I'd try to find a way back to this universe BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE.
