    **de-lurk**

Loved the whole thing. The new Stillgar was a bother but still okay. Susan Surandon was annoying but not in it enough to be a problem.

Back later with a more in-depth review.

    That was an ending?

*waits for Sunday to watch the whole thing at once*

And was anyone else cheesed off at each show having a gratuitous sex scene? I mean, were they really necessary?

If you do a search for "Children of Dune" on Kazaa you can find several musical selections. The beautiful Fremen "Inama Nushif" that was used for the birth montage at the end of Messiah is on there. Rather high quality at 11 megabytes for about five minutes of music. The end credits and Ghanima's "epilogue" can also be found there.

I very much intend on getting the soundtrack. One of the very best television mini-series soundtracks ever. It stands right up there with motion picture soundtracks. Excellent.

Unfortunately, that seems to be what the core audience of the Sci-Fi Channel wants to see...about half of their "original programming" looks like sci-fi soft porn.

That's why "Battlestar Galactica" fans were up in arms, because Sci-Fi's planned remake is supposed to have Apollo as a female, which was not the case in the original series.

Well, I don't know about this series (see two posts up for explanation :p ), but there weren't a lot of sex scenes in the first series, I thought. But, plotwise, I agree, even those were not really neccessary.

Is this new series so much worse than the original, then?

I think it was better. My man Alec Newman was utterly fantastic!

I don't think the scenes were that distasteful, and the one with Alia had some reason: since we see Duncan kill her lover later on, seeing him upon the first discovery helps to understand his rage. If it had been rumor, than it could have been dismissed, if it had just been a kiss, then in many viewers' eyes it could have been very innocent. Seeing them in a carnal state seemed to insure that we saw Alia and Javid in the wrong, and saw how it wasn't about love at all, and could ultimately sympathize with Duncan.

As for the one in Part III, it was a little less necessary, but I liked the idea of Ghanima killing him while he was in a moment of triumph (he could have been drunk, but that wouldn't have been so much of a victory on her part because he wouldn't have felt his own death; so it was really the only way to convey the mood that the director, IMO, was going for).

And where was the third one someone mentioned?

Also: need I bring to light the orgy scene in the first mini?

    I liked it.

I felt bad for the Benegezerit Reverand Mother who got her throat slit. Sure she wanted the kids dead, but I preferred her as an alive villain. She reminded me of the old days.

Let's see now, Ghannimah now rules the Empire and her chief advisors are from House Corrino. Hmm

All I know is I gotta read the books now to satisfy my now present need for Galactic Politics.

Hook: Actually, Leto and Ghani both rule, and later are married to one another (though it is obviously never consumated)

Leto rules the Empire. He and Ghani marry to carry on the Atredies name, though they never consumate the marriage. Ghanima and Farad'n are the progenitors of a new breeding program overseen by Leto.

I was disappointed in part 3. They rushed the middle part of the book to get to the end.

The score, which I've seen many people talk about was good, though I felt some of the music was too much like Star Wars, almost like a ripoff.

EDIT: I too was put off by the graphic sex scenes. Duncan never catches Alia and Javid in the book, all he hears are rumors, and the betrayal in Alia's eyes.

I find it kind of interesting that, in the end, the Atreides adopted a matrilineal-type arrangment in oder to carry on their name when all along the entire society had been patrilineal. In matralineal societies, the role of father is taken on by the mother's brother, not the biological father, and he is, in a sense, the "husband." This therefore leads to blood lines being traced through the mother, thus why it's called matrilineal... anyways, I just found that interesting...

It has 3 parts; the first part being Dune Messiah, the last 2 parts being Children of Dune.

Frankly, I was disappointed by the first two parts. The third part, however, kicked entirely way too much ass. It was great.

No, its definatly only a three parter. ?[face_plain]

Perhapse you caught part of the orginal that was playing infront of the first showing. ;)

The only other possiblity is that you are watching the reruns of the previous days ep and not realizing it :p

No, there are only three. If you're watching the fourth then perhaps you've been watching parts of the original Dune mini or something.

Another towering success for Harrison and Herbert, and another crushing blow to Jackson and Tolkien (too bad their cult followers are too blind to realize how bad that story actually is)

Children of Dune was magnificent. The CGI and score were amazing, and the acting was almost always beyond what we see so often in film today (except for that one scene with Stilgar, but you gotta give the guy some credit, since he really didn't speak english) I thought the changes made were acceptabl, but a fourth episode would have been nice if just to round out some abandoned or nearly abandoned organizations, characters, and plot threads.

The "scene" at the end of Dune Messiah, definately some of the best cinema made in the past couple of decades. It was completely unexpected and welcomed too. The clip of Ederic dying was sooo sad. The only death which was more moving was Alia's. I loved how they used dialogue and quotes from the Dune miniseries, which added to the flow and the impact of the dialogue.

Edward Atterton was a perfect character foil for Alia. I can respect the changes they made in the actors, seeing as how it was necessary for the story. I also think that the person they cast for Farad'n was perfect and fit the role like a glove. My only gripe with the story is that they didn't have Leto's coronation ceremony with the naibs. I also was looking foreward to seeing Alia take the dive at the end, but then we wouldn't have had the scene with her and Jessica.

Do we really need to bash Lord of the Rings here?

    Seems childish to me.

Yeah. :) One could just as easily argue that COD was a crushing blow to a certain other trilogy... ;) There is little point in bringing such an argument here.

I agree. Although CoD was entertaining for the most part, I dont think Jackson and Tolkien have anything to fear as far CoD is concerned.

Besides, IMO it's silly to compare the two when one was a made for TV mini and the other a huge budget Hollywood trilogy. Apples and oranges.
